It simply isn't going to feel the same. It has been years since a U. S. Open has been so affected by injury. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out. So is former champion Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray is here, but he clearly isn't himself. Even Novak Djokovic seems to be a little bit off. It is clearly a wide-open field.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS. Lou Gehrig's disease. You've probably heard the name--or at least one of them--before. Now you are probably inspired to join the fight against it, and likely already have. That's because the ALS ice-bucket challenge has been sweeping the nation through social media over the past three weeks.
Rafael Nadal's first match since the French Open, which will come just three days after he captured a ninth Roland Garros title by defeating Novak Djokovic last weekend, is set for Wednesday against Dustin Brown during second-round action at the Gerry Weber Open.
Tennis is no longer a young man's game. Roger Federer, 32, is third in the 2014 race to London. David Ferrer, also 32, is No. 5 in the world. Tommy Haas may be struggling physically, but at 36 years old he is still ranked 16th.

Is there some rule that says Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer can never be sound at the same time? Nadal, after a long bout of back problems, is back to defend his title at Indian Wells, but Ferrer -- who lost his opener last year -- will be unable to play; he is the top player missing.
Grigor Dimitrov had had a very late semifinal the night before (all matches at this event take place late; you'd think it was a cartel hiding from public scrutiny). He admitted he didn't feel too good after that, and when asked how he managed to come back from a break down in the third set of this three hour match, he declared, "Belief is the only thing that kept me going today...
Just as in the semifinal against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer started stronger than the scoreline. He and Tomas Berdych were almost even in the first set, but Berdych won it, and went up by a break in the second -- and then Federer started amping up the pressure.
In the first set of this, Roger Federer kept threatening Novak Djokovic and not quite getting the break. Things didn't look good. But he really does seem to be rediscovering his confidence. Or something...
Kevin Anderson lives one and a half miles from the site of the Delray Beach Open and the 6 ft 8” South African could not have looked more at home as he swept into the final with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Steve Johnson.
ASICS is well represented at the Delray Beach Open as two seeds were ousted tonight by ASICS players!

Top seed Tommy Haas continued to break barriers at age 35, advancing in his opening match over Wayne Odesnik in well under an hour. "With injuries, I lost probably three or four years of my career," said the 12th-ranked Haas.
