Bryan Bothers Better Than Ever As They Turn 36 Years Old. Happy BDAY Bob & Mike

By Ricky Dimon

Tennis is no longer a young man’s game. Roger Federer, 32, is third in the 2014 race to London. David Ferrer, also 32, is No. 5 in the world. Tommy Haas may be struggling physically, but at 36 years old he is still ranked 16th.

And in those cases we are talking strictly about singles. By comparison, doubles is a sport for old geezers.

So when Bob and Mike Bryan turn 36 on Tuesday, don’t feel sorry for what may be their last 27 months or so in professional tennis (they have planned for retirement following the 2016 Rio Olympics). Instead, if you are a fellow doubles player, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Since turning 35, the Bryan brothers have won Madrid, Rome, the French Open, Queen’s Club, Wimbledon, Cincinnati, Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo–among others. They are currently in the midst of a 21-match winning streak, which includes five consecutive titles. They are 28-1 this season against opponents not named Eric Butorac or Raven Klaasen. With his triumph earlier this month in Monte-Carlo, Mike became the first man to win 100 ATP-level doubles titles.

“It’s amazing to hit triple digits,” Mike assured. “It’s a great milestone to say that you have 100; to be the first player to hit 100 titles. (It) kind of snuck up on us pretty quick. Last few years we’ve been really hot. We always wanted to beat the Woodies’ record of 61. Then trying to clip Todd Woodbridge’s 83 titles. All of a sudden I’m at 99. It will feel a lot better when we do it as a team. We’ve always looked at our career as team titles; doing it together. That’s the huge goal for this year, to do it together.”

The Bryan brothers currently own 98 winners’ trophies as a team. Additional accomplishments include two NCAA team championships with Stanford, an NCAA doubles title in 1998, 15 Grand Slam titles and a Davis Cup victory for the United States in 2007.

Off the court, they have their own Bryan Brothers Band–which has featured cameo appearances by Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, among many others (you may or may not want your ears to hear the Djokovic and Murray segments!). They have also been instrumental in keeping doubles on the ATP both alive and prospering, even though attempts to revive a full third set as opposed to a third-set super-tiebreaker have so far been unsuccessful.

So let’s all wish the Bryan brothers very happy 36th birthdays, either through articles like this one or–thanks to the social media-crazed world in which we live–on Twitter or Facebook. And let’s hope it’s one filled with family, fun, music, tweets, instagram photos, and maybe even some more cartoons featuring Micaela, Bob’s already-famous daughter.

Happy Birthday!

Editors Note.

We have known the brothers since they were boys. We recently had the pleasure of being with their family and friends as the brothers won Indian Wells for a second year in a row. They are the best doubles team in the world!!! EVER !!!! They are totally amazing. They are the best ambassadors the game has. Not the game of doubles , That almost goes without saying. They are the best ambassadors for the game of TENNIS !!

Happy Birthday Bob and Mike from your friends here @ 10sballs.com

Another Editors Note : Geezer wanted us to mention that Donald Mills of the world famous Mills Brothers would have turned 99 today. He loved watching the twins play. He loved that they shared the love of the music. It’s all about the beat. Donald loved how they moved together on the court. Donald was a great friend of tennis. He loved the game and played with most of Hollywood in the forties as well as a King (King Gustav) of Sweden. Donald spent one December watching Greg Rusedski training in Los Angeles. The last pro tennis he saw was @the Hyatt in Indian Wells. He was playing the Palm Springs follies and had VIP seats daily on “Charlie’s Terrace “. He was a guest of a friend of Geezers , we had to give a mention of Donald and his brothers today. They started singing in the twenties and in early 2000 Donald was still singing. He sang in nine decades. Yes , he started as the youngest son in the family of four boys. . They sold gold records in eight of those nine decades. Actually they were the first African American group to go GOLD . Donald and the twins share the birthday. All gems. All great Humanitarians. All brothers that played together and stayed together.
