Clearly Tommy Robredo's great comeback is still continuing. It's very likely that this will take him to #16; Richard Gasquet remains #9 for now, but he is in danger of losing that spot to countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It's a substantial help to Roger Federer, though, who now is almost certain to stay #8 or higher.

On the other hand, this opens a big opportunity for Murray and for David Ferrer. Juan Martin del Potro seemed to be rather dazed by the end -- perhaps the heat got to him; he's a very big guy, after all -- and Roberto Bautista Agut played very good tennis, and it ended with del Potro the first of the top ten seeds to fall.
By contrast to Azarenka, Sharapova spent three and a half hours feeling the full burden of the heat; it's a good thing she has a day off! Karin Knapp managed to add a few points but will fall at least one ranking spot, from #44 to #45.

It was a patchy performance for three-time champion Victoria Azarenka as she began the quest for another Melbourne title. The tournament number two, led seeds to winning starts as she beat Swede Johanna Larsson 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the sweltering summer temperatures.
Rafel Nadal won his opening match 6-4 when Bernard Tomic was forced to retire after losing the the opening set 6-4 with a leg injury. The win in 41 minutes marked Nadal's return to Melbourne after missing 2013 as he recovered from knee problems.
Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum produced the first major upset of the fortnight with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 first-round knockout of of former Wimbledon winner and sixth seed Petra Kvitova. The 21-year-old Asian pulled off the opening-day surprise of the tournament in nervy style.
Opening day winners got through before this week's heat wave began to bite, with seeds taking advantage with wins into the second round of the season's first grand slam. Instead of rising into the 40s Celsius and beyond as they will do from Tuesday through at least Friday...

David Ferrer had won this title three years in a row. But he is really, really in a funk right now. It won't affect his ranking for the moment; he stays at #3. But, as our feature reveals, he is in real danger of falling to #4, or even #5, after the Australian Open.
So sorry to see that Bethanie had to retire. She played so well all week. She barely got a day off ! She played thru the qualifying rounds and also along the way she took out the number one seed.
For the second straight week, David Ferrer struggled, but at least he survived to keep his winning streak here alive.
