Australian Open

Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum produced the first major upset of the fortnight with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 first-round knockout of of former Wimbledon winner and sixth seed Petra Kvitova. The 21-year-old Asian pulled off the opening-day surprise of the tournament in nervy style. “It’s really exciting, I’m really happy today that I did well. I just love hard court. I’m happy to play and excited, I just tried to do my best. That’s it, there was no secret.”

The loss was the earliest for the sixth-ranked Kvitova in Melbourne since 2009 and left the Czech as stunned as her opponent. “I really wanted to know what’s happen out there, but unfortunately I didn’t play well. I didn’t play my game what I really tried all off season to work on. It was great off season. I was really excited to be here, feeling good.

“But I think that probably I wanted too much, and then everything just fell down.”

top seed Serena Williams crushed Aussie teenager Ashleigh Barty 6-2, 6-1. 2013 finalist and fourth seed Li Na started with a rout of Croatian teenager Ana Conjuh, losing just two games.

German ninth seed Angelique Kerber, losing finalist in Sydney, beat Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Former number one Ana Ivanovic, the No. 14, beat Kiki Bertens 6-4, 6-4.

Seven-time grand slam winner Venus Williams lost as Russian Ekaterina Makarova completed a matches set of Williams sister upsets at the tournament with her 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win against the injured veteran who was playing the event for only the second time in four years. Makarova also beat No. 1 Serena in the fourth round two years ago.

Swiss 16-year-old Belinda Bencic began showing her long-term potential as a star-to-be by defeating 43-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Date-Krumm was born six years before Bencic’s own mother by way of comparison.

Casey Dellacqua earned an Australian win over Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-2. Canadian teen Eugenie Bouchard defeated China’s wild card Chen Tang Hao, the number 431, by a 7-5, 6-1 scoreline while American Madison Keys needed seven match points to stop Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2, 6-7 (8-10), 9-7. Australian Samantha Stosur, never past the fourth round at home, started with a defeat of Klara Zakopalova 6-3, 6-4.
