Gabriela Dabrowski takes home Doubles Player of the Year honours; Rebecca Marino is the Most Improved Player and Leylah Annie Fernandez is the Junior Player of the Year
Montreal, December 12, 2018 — Tennis Canada announced on Wednesday that Eugenie Bouchard is the winner of the 2018 Excellence Awards in the Female Player of the Year and Singles Player of the Year categories. In addition, Gabriela Dabrowski has been named Doubles Player of the Year, while Rebecca Marino is the Most Improved Player and Leylah Annie Fernandez is the Junior Player of the Year.
Bouchard takes this honour for the fifth time in six years. During the 2018 season, she saw a significant progression which allowed her to finish the year ranked no. 88. She also finished her year on a high note by reaching the semi-finals of a tournament in Luxembourg after having to go through qualifying. Earlier this year, she reached the semi-finals of a tournament in Gstaad and also won all three of her qualifying matches as well as her first round match at Wimbledon and the US Open. The Quebec native, who slid to the 194th spot in the rankings in June, was able to regain her place in the Top 100 and was thus able to secure her participation in the main draw at the Australian Open.
Dabrowski, Marino and Fernandez also honoured
With her ranking of no. 10, Dabrowski is the country’s best doubles player and one of the stars of this field on the WTA tour. In January, she won her second Grand Slam title when she was crowned mixed doubles champion at the Australian Open playing alongside Mate Pavic. She added three WTA titles to her collection, at tournaments in Sydney, Eastbourne and Doha. She finished her exceptional season in style by qualifying for the end of year WTA Finals along with her partner Yifan Xu.
2018 was a momentous year for Rebecca Marino who made a return to competition after an absence of over five years. The 28-year-old began the season without a ranking and finished the year ranked inside the Top 200, currently sitting at no. 189. She was notably crowned champion of five tournaments on the ITF Circuit, three of which were the first events in her comeback. Towards the end of the year, she reached the quarter-finals at the National Bank Cup in Quebec City.
For her part, Fernandez, had success both on the junior and professional circuits in 2018. In fact, in addition to reaching the semi-finals at the Junior French Open as well as no. 11 in the ITF junior rankings, the 16-year-old athlete also notched her first victory in the main draw of a WTA tournament by defeating compatriot Gabriela Dabrowski at the National Bank Cup.

The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards are selected by a committee comprised of high-ranked Tennis Canada personnel and the country’s top national coaches.

Montréal, le 12 décembre 2018 — Tennis Canada a annoncé mercredi qu’Eugenie Bouchard était la lauréate du Prix d’excellence de 2018 dans les catégories Joueuse de l’année et Joueuse de simple de l’année. De plus, Gabriela Dabrowski a été choisie Joueuse de double de l’année, tandis que Rebecca Marino est la Joueuse la plus améliorée et Leylah Annie Fernandez la Joueuse junior de l’année.
Bouchard remporte cet honneur pour une cinquième fois en six ans. Au cours de la saison 2018, elle a connu une magnifique progression qui lui permet de finir sa saison au 88e échelon. Elle a d’ailleurs terminé son année sur une bonne note en accédant au carré d’as du tournoi du Luxembourg après avoir franchi avec succès les épreuves de qualification. Plus tôt cette année, elle a atteint la demi-finale du tournoi de Gstaad et a remporté ses trois matchs de qualification, puis sa rencontre de premier tour à Wimbledon et aux Internationaux des États-Unis. La Québécoise, qui avait glissé jusqu’au 194e rang en juin, s’est ainsi assurée de retrouver sa place dans le Top 100 et surtout de pouvoir faire partie du tableau principal des Internationaux d’Australie.

En vertu de son 10e rang mondial, Dabrowski est la meilleure joueuse de double du pays et l’une des vedettes de cette spécialité sur le circuit de la WTA. En janvier, elle a raflé son deuxième titre du Grand Chelem en étant sacrée championne du double mixte des Internationaux d’Australie en compagnie du Croate Mate Pavic. Elle a ajouté trois titres de la WTA à son tableau de chasse, soit ceux des tournois de Sydney, d’Eastbourne et de Doha. Elle a terminé en beauté cette saison exceptionnelle en se qualifiant pour le championnat de fin de saison de la WTA avec sa partenaire Yifan Xu.

Fernandez, pour sa part, a connu du succès sur les scènes junior et professionnelle en 2018. En effet, en plus d’atteindre le carré d’as de l’épreuve junior de Roland-Garros et de se hisser jusqu’au 11e rang du classement junior de l’ITF, l’athlète de 16 ans a également enregistré sa première victoire au tableau principal d’un tournoi de la WTA en battant sa compatriote Gabriela Dabrowski à la Coupe Banque Nationale.

Gabriela s’est affirmée plus que jamais comme l’une des meilleures joueuses de double du monde ; le courage, la persévérance et la détermination de Rebecca lui ont permis de connaître un retour au jeu couronné de succès ; tandis que Leylah Annie a su retenir l’attention des Canadiens grâce à ses résultats, non seulement chez les juniors, mais aussi chez les professionnelles. Ceci fut une année charnière pour nos athlètes et nous attendons avec impatience de suivre leurs futurs exploits. »
