****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Australian Open

Opening day winners got through before this week’s heat wave began to bite, with seeds taking advantage with wins into the second round of the season’s first grand slam. Instead of rising into the 40s Celsius and beyond as they will do from Tuesday through at least Friday, temperatures stayed at a relatively tame 31 degrees.

German 12th seed Tommy Haas, a 35-year-old tennis miracle, was an early victim, though, with a shoulder injury forcing him quit trailing 7-5, 5-2 to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Top see and four-time champion Novak Djokovic shook off hte rust to start with a defeat of Lukas Lacko 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. “This was my first official match in five or six weeks. I was a bit rusty in the first two sets, I was struggling. But everything world in the third set. I’m just glad to go through.”

Number three David Ferrer advanced over Alejandro Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych, sporting new kit which made him look like an Argentine footballer, beat Kazak Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Swiss eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka got on and off the court in just over an hour 6-4, 4-1 when Andrey Golubev retired injured with a calf problem. While admitting that it’s always tough to play an injured opponent, Wawrinka said that beating the heat was useful.

“It’s better to finish quickly the first match, but the most important is to win. The heat has never been a problem for me. It’s the same for every player. You need to be ready. You need to feel strong physically for playing with that heat.”

Ninth seed Richard Gasquet showed his healing power after withdrawing from last week’s Kooyong event with fatigue. The Frenchman crushed compatriot David Guez 7-5, 6-4, 6-1. No. 14 Mikhail Youzhny and 15th-seeded Fabio Fognini both reached the second round. Fognini will next play Finn Jarkko Nieminen, who needed three and a half hours to overcome Dudi Sela 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-3 as he played his seventh five-set match at the event since 2003, winning his fifth.
