****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Australian Open

Singles – Third Round: (2) N Djokovic def. D Istomin 6-3 6-3 7-5

Hardly a surprise, and it makes very little difference for Novak Djokovic, but it means no Top Forty spot for Denis Istomin.

Singles – Third Round: (3) D Ferrer def. (29) J Chardy 6-2 7-6(7-5) 6-2

David Ferrer really does seem to finally have the kinks out of his game. Maybe the hot conditions are helping him; he’s small enough that the heat will affect him (slightly) less. Two more wins would probably let him keep the #3 ranking. But Jeremy Chardy, a quarterfinalist last year, falls from #31 to no better than #44.

Singles – Third Round: (7) T Berdych def. D Dzumhur 6-4 6-2 6-2

Tomas Berdych keeps his lead over Stanislas Wawrinka in the contest for #6, but it remains very close — and Wawrinka, who had a walkover in this round, is a lot more rested.

Singles – Third Round: (17) T Robredo def. (9) R Gasquet 2-6 7-5 6-4 7-6(8-6)

Clearly Tommy Robredo’s great comeback is still continuing. It’s very likely that this will take him to #16; Richard Gasquet remains #9 for now, but he is in danger of losing that spot to countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It’s a substantial help to Roger Federer, though, who now is almost certain to stay #8 or higher.

Singles – Third Round: (15) F Fognini def. S Querrey 7-5 6-4 6-4

This makes it quite likely, although not yet certain, that Fabio Fognini will hit the Top Fifteen. Unfortunately, he needs to beat Novak Djokovic to clinch. Sam Querrey will probably return to the Top Fifty — but just barely.

Singles – Third Round: (19) K Anderson def. E Roger-Vasselin 3-6 4-6 6-3 7-6(7-5) 7-5

It now seems pretty safe to say that Kevin Anderson is back — although he needs one more win to return to the Top Twenty. Edouard Roger-Vasselin will probably be #38.

Singles – Third Round: F Mayer def. (20) J Janowicz 7-5 6-2 6-2

Unlike Anderson, Jerzy Janowicz probably isn’t all the way back — and although he defended his points, he might well lose his Top Twenty spot. Florian Mayer has a very good chance at the Top Thirty.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Hanley/Marray 6-4 7-6(7-3)

This was the day’s very last doubles match; because of all the heat delays, the Bryans are far behind most teams. Even if that costs them, to be sure, their #1 rankings are safe.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Marrero/Verdasco def. Duckworth/Ebden 3-6 6-3 6-2

Marrero/Verdasco are behind, too, and they still have points to defend, so there is a real possibility that they could fall a spot or two.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Dodig/Melo def. Guccione/Kokkinakis 7-5 7-6(7-5)

Dodig/Melo didn’t play last year, so they are already adding points and have a good shot at #5/#6.

Doubles – First Round: (5) Paes/Stepanek def. Dlouhy/Rosol 6-4 6-1

Paes/Stepanek are already adding points, too, so their Top Ten spots look pretty safe. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….12950

1..(1) Bryan………….12950

3..(3) Peya……………7310

3..(3) Soares………….7310

5..(5) Melo……………5270

6..(7) Dodig…………..5200

7..(6) Marrero…………4880

8..(8) Verdasco………..4310

9..(9) Paes……………4115

10.(10) Stepanek………..4080

Doubles – First Round: Nieminen/Tursunov def. Begemann/Emmrich 7-6(7-3) 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez def. Brown/Monfils 6-4 2-6 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Seppi/Starace def. Kamke/F Mayer 7-6(7-1) 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Bracciali/Dolgopolov def. Erlich/A Ram 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: Mirnyi/Youzhny def. (6) Granollers/M Lopez 4-6 6-3 7-6(7-3)

Hard to believe Mirnyi/Youzhny were unseeded, but this was very bad news for Granollers/Lopez. They were semifinalists last year, and were already down to #11/#12; this will drop them to around #20.

Doubles – Second Round: Bhambri/Venus def. (10) Rojer/Tecau 6-4 6-4

The preceding result at least made sense; this is just crazy — and it costs Rojer his chance at the Top Fifteen. Indeed, he too might lose his Top Twenty spot. Horia Tecau is already below that mark.

Doubles – Second Round: (13) Llodra/Mahut def. Oswald/Stadler 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-2)

Doubles – Second Round: (14) Kubot/Lindstedt def. Mitchell/Thompson 6-1 6-3

All those upsets above make it pretty sure that Robert Lindstedt will stay Top Twenty — indeed, he’s getting close to the Top Fifteen.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (7) Peschke/Matkowski def. Ar. Rodionova/Kyrgios 7-5 6-4

Mixed rankings would have promoted Peschke/Matkowski to the #4 seeds, so no surprise here.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Barty/Peers def. Rogowska/Smith 6-3 6-4
