After two and three-quarter hours, leading 6-5 in the tiebreak and serving, Donald Young double-faulted. Two points later, he was out of the tournament. Garcia-Lopez is one win away from the Top Thirty; Young loses his chance to rise above his current #46.
The post-Wimbledon horrors continue for Eugenie Bouchard. This was almost as lopsided as the score. Not how Bouchard wanted to go into the U. S. Open! She won less than half her service points -- even on first serves, she won only 51% of the points.
That second set problem Roger Federer had made this a longer match, but it didn't make much difference to the final outcome. David Ferrer just can't solve Federer. In the course of more than a decade of facing his Spanish opponent, Federer has won all sixteen meetings.
Ana Ivanovic had to be tired for this match -- she had played two and three-quarter hours the evening before. She had perhaps been sick. And she was facing Serena Williams on an American hardcourt.
This was a match of rather wild momentum swings. The first two swings are obvious, but in the third set, Serena Williams built a 5-2 lead, then almost let it slip away. That leaves Caroline Wozniacki at #11, and with no chance to rise above that at New Haven.

Going into this, we couldn't help but think that this was a contest to see which of these two had slipped more from his prime. It was, obviously, Murray, who will not rise above #9 and therefore will need a withdrawal by Rafael Nadal or someone if he is to earn the #8 U. S. Open seed.

Maybe Novak Djokovic suffered from one too many headlines. This is the one Masters event he has never won, so naturally everyone was wondering if he could win it this year.
Samantha Stosur led in both tiebreaks -- including 4-0 in the first set tiebreak -- but when it came down to it, it was Serena Williams versus Samantha Stosur, and you know who will blink in those situations! That will cost Stosur three ranking spots, but it still looks as if she'll be one of the Top 24 U. S. Open seeds.
