*Tidbits

* No return to #3 for Wawrinka after shock loss to Benneteau

* Fognini, Robredo both lose — which means Fognini is the #16 U. S. Open seed

* Murray may be seeded below the Top Eight after loss to Federer.

Cincinnati

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) R Federer def. (8) A Murray 6-3 7-5

Going into this, we couldn’t help but think that this was a contest to see which of these two had slipped more from his prime. It was, obviously, Murray, who will not rise above #9 and therefore will need a withdrawal by Rafael Nadal or someone if he is to earn the #8 U. S. Open seed. Roger Federer has now clinched the #3 ranking, and he’s now less than 4000 points behind Rafael Nadal. Keep this up and there is just a chance that he could regain the #2 spot from Nadal at the U. S. Open — if he wins the title.

Singles – Quarterfinal: J Benneteau def. (3) S Wawrinka 1-6 6-1 6-2

Apparently Julien Benneteau wants more than just a U. S. Open seed. He wants a high seed.

Whatever it was that happened to Stan Wawrinka, it happened suddenly. After breezing through the first set in twenty minutes, Wawrinka couldn’t keep the ball in the court after that. Benneteau won more than 60% of the points in the last two sets. That will take him to #27 in the world, just below his career high. Make the final and he’ll not only reach a career high, he’ll be one of the Top 24 seeds in New York. Indeed, he needs only two more withdrawals to make it even if he loses his semifinal, and there are several iffy guys above him — Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori, Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The loss means that Stan Wawrinka will remain stuck at #4 rather than returning to #3. It won’t matter much if Nadal plays the U. S. Open, since Wawrinka would be in the #3/#4 seeding block no matter what. But if Nadal pulls out, this costs Wawrinka his chance to be the #2 seed. Either Nadal gets the spot or it will go to Roger Federer.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) M Raonic def. (15) F Fognini 6-1 6-0

Not much sign of Fabio Fognini’s stamina here; he got pretty well stomped. For Milos Raonic, that kept alive his hopes of reaching the Top Five — but it left Fognini waiting to see how Tommy Robredo did to learn if he would get a Top Sixteen U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) D Ferrer def. (16) T Robredo 6-4 3-6 6-3

Unlike Fabio Fognini, Tommy Robredo made a valiant attempt to clinch the #16 U. S. Open seed, but he came up just short. He’ll be #18, meaning that he’ll be stuck with the #17 seed unless Rafael Nadal or someone pulls out. David Ferrer still hasn’t clinched the #5 ranking, but Milos Raonic now needs a title to catch him.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Rojer/Tecau 7-6(7-5) 6-7(6-8) 10-2

This was definitely not pretty, but the Bryans got the job done. Maybe it will lead to better things.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Pospisil/Sock def. (2) Peya/Soares 6-2 5-7 10-7

One of these days, Pospisil/Sock will lose a match. But we’re still waiting….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: ((6) Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. (3) Nestor/Zimonjic 6-3 6-4

It’s going to be a busy weekend for Julien Benneteau, with semifinals in both singles and doubles.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Johnson/Querrey def. Lindstedt/Matkowski 7-6(9-7) 4-6 10-2

Apart from that bright moment in Melbourne, it continues to be a tough, tough year for Robert Lindstedt.

U. S. Open Seed Update

Even yesterday, the biggest suspense about the U. S. Open seeds was whether Rafael Nadal would be one of them. That’s even more true today, because most seed contests have been settled.

Settled even before the event began was the #1 seed. That will be Novak Djokovic. Nadal will be #2 if he can play.

If Nadal plays, then Roger Federer will be #3 and Stan Wawrinka #4. If Nadal doesn’t play, then Federer is #2, Wawrinka #3, and the #5 player gets the #4 seed. That’s currently David Ferrer, but Milos Raonic could still pass him with a title.

If Nadal plays, then the seeds in the #5 to #8 group will be Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Raonic, and Grigor Dimitrov.

#9 to #12 will be Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kei Nishikori, and Ernests Gulbis. With Juan Martin del Potro out, #13-#16 will be Richard Gasquet, John Isner, Marin Cilic, and Fabio Fognini.

The #17-#24 block will consist of Tommy Robredo, Roberto Bautista Agut, Kevin Anderson, Feliciano Lopez, Gael Monfils, Alexandr Dolgopolov (if he can play), Mikhail Youzhny, and Philipp Kohlschreiber. Leonardo Mayer is next in line if Nadal or someone pulls out.

#25-#32 includes Mayer, Julien Benneteau, Nicolas Almagro (if he can play), Ivo Karlovic, Santiago Giraldo, Gilles Simon, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Tommy Haas would also be here, but he can’t play, so Jeremy Chardy should get the last seed.

Fernando Verdasco is in if we have another pullout, then Joao Sousa, Yen-Hsun Lu, Radek Stepanek, and Pablo Cuevas.
