NOTES

– For the first time in the Open Era, three men’s players over the age of 30 have reached the Western & Southern Open semifinals: Roger Federer (33), Julien Benneteau (32) and David Ferrer (32). This is Federer’s second semifinal appearance here since his 30th birthday (won the title in 2012 at age 31).

– Federer has reached the semifinals at the Western & Southern Open for the sixth time, which is tied for second-most in the Open. The leaders:

8 – Jimmy Connors

8 – Stefan Edberg

6 – Michael Chang

6 – Roger Federer

6 – Pete Sampras

6 – Mats Wilander

– Federer is 5-0 in the semifinals here, and is one of three players to be undefeated in that round with at least three semifinal appearances (Novak Djokovic 4-0, Pat Rafter 3-0).

– Federer, a five-time Western & Southern Open champion, is bidding to reach his 121st career final. He has won 79 total titles, trailing only Jimmy Connors (109) and Ivan Lendl (94) in the Open Era.

– Federer is attempting to reach his 38th career final at an ATP Masters 1000 event. He is 21-16 in those previous finals.

– Raonic is just the second Canadian to reach the Western & Southern Open semifinals in the Open Era, and the fourth overall. The last Canadian to reach the semis was Mike Belkin in 1969. He is bidding to be the first Canadian to reach the final in Cincinnati.

– Benneteau is the first Frenchman to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati since Arnaud Clement in 2000. He is attempting to be the first French finalist since Guy Forget, who won the title in 1991.

– Benneteau is playing for a spot in his 10th career ATP final. He is 0-9 in his previous finals.

– Benneteau is the first player to reach the semifinals in singles and doubles since Max Mirnyi did so in 2003. He is attempting to be the first player to reach both the singles and doubles finals since Stefan Edberg in 1993.

– Ferrer has reached the semifinals at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the 15th time in his career. This is the seventh different Masters 1000 event where he has reached the final four.

– For the first time in tournament history, all four semifinalist have held the WTA’s No. 1 ranking. Serena Williams is currently in her 201st week at No. 1. Caroline Wozniacki held the top spot for 67 weeks, Maria Sharapova for 21 weeks and Ana Ivanovic for 12 weeks. In the history of the men’s tournament, only once had the four semifinalists all been No. 1s (1999 – Agassi, Kafelnikov, Rafter & Sampras).

– Williams and Sharapova are now tied for the most semifinal appearances here among active players with three. They join Jelena Jenkovic and Vera Zvonareva

– Williams and Sharapova are among the winningest players in the Open Era history of the tournament. The Top 3 for match wins:

20 – Jelena Jankovic

14 – Serena Williams

14 – Vera Zvonareva

13 – Maria Sharapova

13 – Linda Tuero

– Williams, who turns 33 on September 26, is the oldest player to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati in the Open Era.

– This is sixth time Williams has played the Western & Southern Open and she is seeking her first title here. The only other event she has played six times without claiming the title is Sydney. She has a total of 61 career titles from 24 different tournaments. She is vying for a spot in her 79th career final.

– Wozniacki made her professional debut in Cincinnati as a 15-year-old wild card in 2005.

– Sharapova won the Western & Southern Open title in 2011 after finishing as the runner-up in 2010.

– Ivanovic leads the WTA for match wins in 2014 with a 46-12 record. The 46 victories is the second-most in a single season in her career.

– In seven of the 10 years since the women’s event returned to Cincinnati in 2004, at least one Russian has reached the final.

– Prior to the start of play Friday evening, the ATP World Tour honored the Western & Southern Open as part of its Heritage Campaign to recognize tournaments the 29 tournaments have been members since the Tour began in 1990.

About the Western & Southern Open

The Western & Southern Open will be held August 9-17, 2014 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, 20 miles north of Cincinnati in Mason, OH. The tournament is one of the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 events on the men’s tour and a Premier 5 event for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), making it one of only five events in the world outside of the grand slams with events of that caliber occurring during the same week at the same venue. The tournament is also one of the last stops on the Emirates Airline US Open Series before the US Open in New York. Since 1974, the tournament has contributed more than $9 million directly to its beneficiaries: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Barrett Cancer Center and Tennis for City Youth.
