Serena Williams took a record $4 million for winning the US Open, the biggest prize money check that has been given in tennis. Williams got $3 million for winning the US Open, and $1 million for winning the US Open series, with points given for how players perform in warm-up events.
When we saw that the WTA had scheduled three events for the week after the U. S. Open, we couldn't help but think, Why? Why would anyone fly from New York to the Far East for a new event? Especially given that one of this week's events is Quebec City, which is closer to home and is a tournament the players like a lot.
Fourteen months following her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Martina Hingis is rewriting her remarkable résumé yet again.
This was one of those matches where it took Serena Williams a while to get warmed up for the contest. But she's Serena, so get warmed up she did -- after all, she is the only player left in the draw to have won a singles Slam. She slightly widens her lead over #2 Simona Halep, and drops Flavia Pennetta -- a semifinalist last year -- to #16. At least Pennetta still has doubles.

Has the bottom half of the Open draw been taken over by aliens or something? First Agnieszka Radwanska, now this. Admittedly Simona Halep gives the impression of being primarily a traditional-surface player. But Mirjana Lucic-Baroni has always preferred clay and grass, too -- and she just barely beat Shahar Peer.

Agnieszka Radwanska's loss almost guarantees that Maria Sharapova will rise to #4 -- but she has a chance to go higher. She almost blew it. She almost seems in love with three-set matches at Slams these days....
Second seed Simona Halep had to win a battle with wild card Danielle Rose Collins 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-2. The American upstart had only played 27 pro matches and just one at the elite level. French Open finalist Halep admitted that she was taken by surprise by a 20-year-old opponent without a current ranking.
