WTA organizers were dealt a body blow as seven-time grand slam winner Venus Williams withdrew from the pre-Australian Open event to rest after losing a final in New Zealand at the weekend to Ana Ivanovic.
Sydney wasn't the only place hit with withdrawals on Sunday. Hobart didn't lose any seeds -- but, in an outcome that probably won't surprise anyone, it did lose Venus Williams. Venus pulled out after losing her final on Saturday, replaced by Lucky Loser Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
Ana Ivanovic earns her first title since Bali 2011. Because it's an International event, it doesn't help her much -- but she does overtake Sabine Lisicki to earn the #15 ranking. And she will go into the Australian Open on a high note.
This was a sort of an anti-serving contest; Serena was struggling, and we know about Maria Sharapova's shoulder problems. Still, Sharapova lasted long enough to earn the #3 ranking.
