As an indication of progress for Bernard Tomic, this is relatively promising. It's no help to his ranking, though. Richard Gasquet will get to add points if he can win any more matches, but he can't rise above #14 this week.
With the French Open having concluded just a week ago and Wimbledon on the immediate horizon, it's no surprise that almost all of the top players in the world are resting as the tour heads to Eastbourne and 's-Hertogenbosch.
The grass-court season may be short, but to say it is also sweet would be an understatement. Two of the four weeks, of course, are spent at the All-England Club.
Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini delivered again at the French Open, producing a match that was short on quality at times but off the charts in drama. When it was all said and done, Monfils survived a back-and-forth third-round tussle with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory.
No matter that Warren Buffett does not offer $1 billion for a perfect French Open bracket like he does for the NCAA basketball tournament. Nobody would come close. Among those in the third round are Jack Sock, Dusan Lajovic, and Donald Young.
This summer's Citi Open in Washington, D.C. announced its early entree list on Wednesday. Headlining the ATP singles draw so far are John Isner, Richard Gasquet, and Lleyton Hewitt. Bob and Mike Bryan are on board to top the doubles field, while WTA star Sloane Stephens has signed up for the women's singles event.
Another small but solid step toward the Top Four for Roger Federer. It's getting close to certain he'll make it; the only two players who could catch him are David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych, and Ferrer needs a final (one more win by Federer and Ferrer would need a title); Berdych already needs a title.
The score makes this look closer than it was -- Roger Federer lost only three points on serve (he won 94% of first serve points, 92% of second serve points). Ivo Karlovic did pretty well on serve, too, but you knew he was doomed if it came to a tiebreak. For a guy who wasn't sure he would play, Federer certainly looks solid...
This was by no means as easy and straightforward as it looks; it took more than an hour, and if we did this right, Agnieszka Radwanska's first hold of the second set lasted 22 points! Radwanska is assured the #3 ranking; Annika Beck will probably be #43.

Is there some rule that says Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer can never be sound at the same time? Nadal, after a long bout of back problems, is back to defend his title at Indian Wells, but Ferrer -- who lost his opener last year -- will be unable to play; he is the top player missing.
If you look only at the match stats, the wonder is that this was so close. Pablo Andujar should have won this walking away. How often do you get fourteen break point chances against Rafael Nadal on clay?
Because Rotterdam is the largest and strongest of this week's events, we are planning our schedule around it. We will send each day's edition when we are satisfied with the Rotterdam material. This means that we will be covering the late matches from Buenos Aires and (especially) Memphis in the next day's edition.
Gael Monfils really does like playing in France. And indoor hardcourts. This was career final #21. He has won only five of them. Four of the titles (Metz 2009, Montpellier 2010, Stockholm 2011, and now Montpellier 2013) have been on indoor hardcourts, and three (all but Stockholm 2011) have been in France. This marks the first time he has ever won a title twice.
The difference here was probably the second serves. Jerzy Janowicz won only 56% of his second serve points; Richard Gasquet won 70%. And so Gasquet is back in the final. He will stay at #9; Janowicz will stay at #21. It's almost as if this match didn't happen....
