* Gasquet wins at Eastbourne, but otherwise it’s chaos for seeds

* Dolgopolov pulls out, Garcia-Lopez falls to Istomin, Simon loses to Benneteau

* Loss costs Simon his Top Forty ranking

* No surprises at ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Eastbourne

Singles – Second Round: (1) R Gasquet def. B Tomic 6-4 3-6 6-3

As an indication of progress for Bernard Tomic, this is relatively promising. It’s no help to his ranking, though. Richard Gasquet will get to add points if he can win any more matches, but he can’t rise above #14 this week.

Singles – Second Round: (3) F Lopez def. (Q) T Kamke 7-6(12-10) 7-5

After his marathon loss on Sunday, another two hour match was surely the last thing Feliciano Lopez wanted, but it’s what he got. Still, he needs only one more win to effectively guarantee his Top Thirty ranking — and he and Gasquet are the only seeds left in the draw.

Singles – Second Round: D Istomin def. (4) G Garcia-Lopez 6-2 7-5

Not a huge surprise, but a tough loss for Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who was a semifinalist last year; he’ll lose at least two ranking spots.

Singles – Second Round: J Benneteau def. (6) G Simon 6-3 6-4

Things just keep getting worse and worse for Gilles Simon. He was last year’s finalist, so this drops him from #36 to no better than #43. He is, in fact, now just two ranking spots ahead of Julien Benneteau, the guy who beat him. If Benneteau can win one more, he’ll pass Simon in the rankings.

Singles – Second Round: S Querrey def. (LL) V Estrella Burgos 7-5, retired (left leg)

Isn’t there some sort of a rule that you can’t take a Lucky Loser spot unless you’re healthy? Victor Estrella Burgos inherited the draw spot of Alexandr Dolgopolov, who won’t rise above his current #19. Estrella Burgos won’t be rising, either.

Singles – Second Round: M Klizan def. D Young 7-6(7-4) 6-4

At the rate he’s going, Martin Klizan is likely to return to the Top Fifty this week.

Singles – Second Round: E Roger-Vasselin def. J Nieminen 6-2 7-6(7-4)

Edouard Roger-Vasselin is also on the brink of a Top Fifty return.

Singles – Second Round: J Chardy def. C Berlocq 6-4 7-5

The French really do like their grass, even though they don’t have any at home; this win made Jeremy Chardy the fourth Frenchman in the quarterfinal here. He costs Carlos Berlocq his Top Forty chance.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Peya/Soares def. Garcia-Lopez/Oswald 7-6(7-5) 6-2

It is simply amazing how much playing on grass has revived clay experts Peya/Soares.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Huey/Inglot def. (2) Paes/Qureshi 6-4 6-3

It was to be a very good day for British players — five of the eight quarterfinalists are British! On the other hand, other than Peya/Soares, it was a lousy day for seeds.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Skupski/Skupski def. (3) Lindstedt/Mirnyi 6-4 6-7(5-7) 10-5

Robert Lindstedt continues to search for a follow-up to the Australian Open.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Fleming/Hutchins def. Cuevas/Marrero 6-3 6-4

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Fernando Verdasco.

Singles – Second Round: (2) F Verdasco def. J Huta Galung 7-5 6-3

A better match for Fernando Verdasco than his first, although it would be hard for it to be much worse. He hasn’t earned any points yet; he needs a final to budge his ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (3) R Bautista Agut def. M Ebden 7-5 7-6(7-1)

Roberto Bautista Agut has defended his points; he needs a final to rise in the rankings, but if he manages that, he’ll be Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) T de Bakker def. (5) D Tursunov walkover

This made it three bailouts by seeds this week. And we only had sixteen players seeded here and at Eastbourne. That’s getting scary. For Dmitry Tursunov, that means no Top Thirty ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (6) V Pospisil def. J Struff 6-4 6-2

Vasek Pospisil shows again how glad he is to be away from clay. This helps his ranking only slightly — we show him rising from #35 to #33 — but he is the only seed left in the top half, so he could well go deeper. He’s lucky he’s not in the bottom half, where all the seeds are still standing.

Singles – Second Round: (7) N Mahut def. S Johnson 6-2 7-6(7-4)

Counting qualifying last year, this makes it ten straight wins for Nicolas Mahut here. But that means he still has lots of points to defend. With so many players on the brink of the Top Fifty, we’d guess he’ll need one more win to stay above that mark.

Singles – Second Round: (8) J Melzer def. L Lacko 5-7 6-3 6-3

Add Jurgen Melzer to the Top Fifty contenders, although with so many of them around he’ll likely need more than this.

Singles – Second Round: B Becker def. D Sela 6-2 7-5

This appears to mean no return to the Top Hundred for Dudi Sela.

Singles – Second Round: J Sousa def. (Q) M Pavic 6-2 6-4

Joao Sousa has been in a funk lately, but facing a guy ranked below #400 can be a big help. This will likely take Sousa to #45 or higher.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Rojer/Tecau def. Draganja/Mergea 6-3 6-4

Horia Tecau played with Florin Mergea from their junior days, so it’s little surprise he knows how to beat his old partner.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Granollers/Melzer def. Begemann/Rosol 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Bednarek/Dlouhy 6-4 7-6(10-8)
