PRO TOUR NEWS – MEN

*****

Because Rotterdam is the largest and strongest of this week’s events, we are planning our schedule around it. We will send each day’s edition when we are satisfied with the Rotterdam material. This means that we will be covering the late matches from Buenos Aires and (especially) Memphis in the next day’s edition.

****** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ******

* Del Potro survives tough opener in Rotterdam

* Gasquet, Haas also win; Nieminen surprised by Thiem

* Granollers upset in Buenos Aires

****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Rotterdam

Singles – First Round: (1) J del Potro def. G Monfils 7-6(8-6) 6-3

This was a day of extremely long matches, by which standard Juan Martin del Potro had it easy — but still, a real challenge for his first match since an injury. He blocks any hopes Gael Monfils had of rising above his current #23.

Singles – First Round: (2) (WC) A Murray def. E Roger-Vasselin 6-3 6-3

An efficient start to Andy Murray’s push to return to the Top Five. He and del Potro are close enough together that, if they meet in the final, the one who lasts longer will be ranked higher. It appears Edouard Roger-Vasselin will fall below #35.

Singles – First Round: (4) R Gasquet def. (WC) T de Bakker 6-7(5-7) 7-6(7-2) 6-3

A tough start for Richard Gasquet, given that his #9 ranking is under threat (or was, at the time he played, anyway) and that he needs two more wins to add any points.

Singles – First Round: (6) T Haas def. F Verdasco 6-7(4-7) 7-6(7-1) 7-5

Something always seems to happen to keep Fernando Verdasco just short of the Top Thirty. He will probably be #32 or #33.

Singles – First Round: (Q) D Thiem def. J Nieminen 6-4 4-6 6-4

This will cost Jarkko Nieminen a few points and at least one ranking spot.

Singles – First Round: N Mahut def. (LL) D Brands 7-5 6-3

Daniel Brands took the place of Gilles Simon, who will fall from #21 to no better than #22. Nicolas Mahut is getting close to making the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: M Cilic def. (5) J Tsonga 6-4 6-4

Quite the run for Marin Cilic, who has now won seven straight matches (this one quite quickly); he rises to probably #33. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will almost certainly keep the #10 ranking, but this means he can’t pass Richard Gasquet to reach #9.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Nestor/Zimonjic def. (Alt) Cerretani/Shamasdin 6-4 3-6 10-5

Doubles – First Round: Llodra/Mahut def. (WC) Huta Galung/Hutchins 7-6(6-1) 6-3

Buenos Aires

Singles – First Round: (4) N Almagro def. H Zeballos 6-2 7-5

As you can read in the Feature, Horacio Zeballos just fell out of the Top Hundred — and this means that he will stay there.

Singles – First Round: (8) J Chardy def. A Gonzalez 6-4 7-5

Alejandro Gonzalez has looked very promising in Challengers, but somehow he just can’t seem to solve ATP events. It will be interesting to see whether he adjusts, or if he will start falling once he gets more required events on his record.

Singles – First Round: D Gimeno-Traver def. (Q) R Ramirez Hidalgo 7-5 6-2

Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo is 36 years old now, and his ranking is below #150. The good news about a ranking like that is, he almost never has to play away from clay. The bad news is, is this really worth it at his age?

Singles – First Round: A Dolgopolov def. (PR) P Cuevas 6-3 4-6 7-6(7-5)

A small step toward a return to the Top Fifty for Alexandr Dolgopolov, but a very small — and very tiring — one. He’ll need more.

Singles – Second Round: (2) F Fognini def. L Mayer 6-7(4-7) 6-3 6-2

It almost seems as if Fabio Fognini cannot finish a match quickly. These two played each other just four days earlier, in the Vina del Mar final, but it didn’t make Fognini’s life any easier…. The Italian spent more than two hours on the court, and he needs a title to add to his point total. It’s amazing he can still move, let alone keep winning….

Singles – Second Round: (3) T Robredo def. (WC) G Pella 4-6 6-1 6-4

Much tougher than it should have been, but this moves Tommy Robredo to within two wins of the Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: P Andujar def. (5) M Granollers 6-3 6-0

Whatever happened to Marcel Granollers here was pretty bad — he won only 11 points in the second set. He will fall to #35 or lower.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) M Gonzalez/Schwank def. (2) Cabal/Farah 7-5 2-6 10-8

This was to prove a very tough place for doubles seeds. Especially for match tiebreaks.

Doubles – First Round: Andujar/Bracciali def. (3) Marach/Mergea 7-5 3-6 11-9

Doubles – First Round: (4) Cuevas/Zeballos def. Garcia-Lopez/Oswald 4-6 7-6(7-5) 10-3

Doubles – First Round: Gimeno-Traver/Montanes def. Sa/J Sousa 6-3 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Dolgopolov/Starace def. Carreno Busta/Ramos 7-6(11-9) 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Chardy/Dlouhy def. Giraldo/A Gonzalez 7-5 6-1

Memphis

Singles – First Round: (Q) D Kudla def. D Young 6-1 6-1

It must have been one of those “bad day @the office” for D.Y.

Singles – Second Round: M Russell def. T Smyczek 6-2 7-6(7-5)

This seems to be the all-scramble part of the draw: 5’8″/172 cm. Michael Russell against 5″9″/175 cm. Tim Smyczek — with the winner lined up to face Lleyton Hewitt!

Singles – Second Round: J Sock def. J Vesely 6-2 6-1

Jack Sock is up to #85, and he has lots and lots of little results, so it’s rather hard for him to move, but this will probably gain him two or three places.

Singles – Second Round: A Bogomolov def. R Harrison 6-3 2-6 6-2

Ryan Harrison remains stuck below #100.

Doubles – First Round: (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Ebden/R Ram 6-2 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Gabashvili/Kukushkin def. Matosevic/Moser 7-5 2-6 10-8. ( Frank Moser is one of tennis greatest ambassadors. Great global fan favorite. Also goes by Franky. Watch him sometime somewhere when you see his name in the draw. )

Doubles – First Round: Junaid/Marx def. Mannario/Russell 7-5 6-3

****** TODAY’S FEATURE ******

This Week’s Movers — Men

Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Leonardo Mayer — Moved 33 places, from #91 to #58.

Mayer made his first career final at Vina del Mar.

Runner-Up: Santiago Giraldo — Moved 14 places, from #71 to #57

Giraldo made the Vina del Mar semifinal before losing to Mayer.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Mayer, cut ranking 36%

Runner-Up: Gael Monfils — Moved 7 places, 23%, from #30 to #23

Monfils won Montpellier for his first title in more than two years.

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: Horacio Zeballos — Dropped 44 places, from #67 to #111

Zeballos, last year’s Vina del Mar winner, this year lost in the second round.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Zeballos, ranking increased 66%.

Ranking Notes

We had a few spectacular moves this week, but not many medium moves. Mayer (36%) and Monfils (23%) were the only players to rise as much as 20%; Giraldo rose a hair less than 20%, and no one else rose more than 16%. We do note that Vina del Mar surprise Taro Daniel rose 16%, but he’s still only #190.

Other than Zeballos’s 66% drop, the biggest decline was by Michal Przysiezny, who went down 33%, to #76. Benoit Paire fell 21%, to #29; long-injured Jurgen Melzer lost 19%, to #28; no one else fell more than 12%.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

Mayer seems the obvious choice.
