Serena Williams took a record $4 million for winning the US Open, the biggest prize money check that has been given in tennis. Williams got $3 million for winning the US Open, and $1 million for winning the US Open series, with points given for how players perform in warm-up events.
Surprises are starting to come on the men's side at the U.S. Open, with David Ferrer going down to Gilles Simon and unseeded Dominic Thiem booking a spot in the fourth round on Sunday. The women's draw, however, has been in relative shambles the entire way. And the WTA upset trend is showing no signs of stopping.

The biggest names in women’s tennis are heading to Wuhan this September for the inaugural Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, which China’s fastest-growing city will host from 21st to 27th September 2014.
The Thursday, August 14 Day Session (Session 10) is completely sold out and the Western & Southern Open is at tournament capacity for that session. No Center Court, Grandstand or Grounds Pass tickets remain.

As we write, there is a rain delay in Montreal, and it isn't the first of the day. It looks as if the showers won't last long, but the schedule is pretty badly bollixed. We're going to send this now and possibly send another edition later.
Czech doubles player Eva Hrdinova is enjoying her rookie season playing World Team Tennis for the Austin Aces. Hrdinova, the tallest player on the WTA Tour at 6'3" (a modicum taller than Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova), currently leads the WTT Western Conference in mixed doubles winning percentage based on overall games played.

Only one champion remains in the women’s draw as two Czech lefties Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova will face each other in the semi-final. Kvitova owns the head to head 5-0 but they have had some humdinger of matches.
