This was by no means as easy and straightforward as it looks; it took more than an hour, and if we did this right, Agnieszka Radwanska's first hold of the second set lasted 22 points! Radwanska is assured the #3 ranking; Annika Beck will probably be #43.

Is there some rule that says Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer can never be sound at the same time? Nadal, after a long bout of back problems, is back to defend his title at Indian Wells, but Ferrer -- who lost his opener last year -- will be unable to play; he is the top player missing.
Although the tennis world’s current star names such Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were hired for undisclosed figures believed to be in excess of $2 million each for their services in the International Tennis Premier League in Sunday’s Dubai-based draft...
This time, Tomas Berdych had his first serve working; he put sixty-odd percent of his first deliveries in the court. As a result, he was never broken. He's still only #7 in safe points, but he's in the soft half of the draw.
Novak Djokovic on whether Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are his friends or competitors: “Somewhere in between. We are competing, if you want to call us rivals. It’s tough to be close friends with somebody you’re competing against..
Roger Federer went down an early break in the second set of this, finally got it back, but lost the tiebreak, and it meant that he had to spend more than two hours on the court. It doesn't seem a very good recipe for success.
Former grand slam finalist Marcos Baghdatis beat Miguel Angel Reyes of 6-2 6-4, American Donald Young put out Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3 6-3 and Rio finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov started with a defeat of eighth seed Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2.

If you look only at the match stats, the wonder is that this was so close. Pablo Andujar should have won this walking away. How often do you get fourteen break point chances against Rafael Nadal on clay?
It looks as if Edouard Roger-Vasselin will gain a ranking spot or two, but he remains in the #35 vicinity. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will stay at #10 -- after all, he has champion's points to defend.
A depressing result so soon after Karlovic made the Memphis final. Any additional points will count for Kevin Anderson.
Andy Murray had very complimentary words for his opponent here -- "I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more of him" -- but this looks depressingly like the way Murray played at the start of the year, before he really got on his feet. He won't make it back to the Top Five at that rate -- but at least he'll get the chance to do better.
Because Rotterdam is the largest and strongest of this week's events, we are planning our schedule around it. We will send each day's edition when we are satisfied with the Rotterdam material. This means that we will be covering the late matches from Buenos Aires and (especially) Memphis in the next day's edition.
Top seed and winner of the last two editions David Ferrer looked unstoppable on South American clay as the Spaniard began his Argentine title defence by beating Maximo Gonzalez 7-6(7), 6-4 and running his Buenos Aires win streak to 11 matches.
