****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Rotterdam

Singles – Second Round: (1) J del Potro def. P Mathieu 6-2 7-6(7-2)

From now on, the points count for Juan Martin del Potro, but he needs a lot more to stay at #4. Paul-Henri Mathieu remains well below the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: (2) (WC) A Murray def. (Q) D Thiem 6-4 3-6 6-3

Andy Murray had very complimentary words for his opponent here — “I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of him” — but this looks depressingly like the way Murray played at the start of the year, before he really got on his feet. He won’t make it back to the Top Five at that rate — but at least he’ll get the chance to do better.

Singles – Second Round: (3) T Berdych def. N Mahut 6-4 6-3

Tomas Berdych keeps alive his faint hope of reaching #6; he can’t quite make it to #5. Nicolas Mahut will be at or slightly below #40.

Singles – Second Round: P Kohlschreiber def. (4) R Gasquet 7-5 7-5

Richard Gasquet had clinched the #9 ranking by the time he lost this, but this means he will remain a very vulnerable #9. Philipp Kohlschreiber, though, looks as if he just might make the Top 25; he definitely knocks Vasek Pospisil out. And he has a real opportunity here; the bottom five seeds are all out, so Kohlschreiber will face an unseeded semifinal opponent.

Singles – Second Round: J Janowicz def. (6) T Haas 6-4 6-4

Bad news for Tommy Haas, who really needs to start adding points at 500 point and larger events. He had an outside shot at the Top Ten here; this takes care of that. He will stay at his current #12. As a result, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has now clinched the #10 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: E Gulbis def. (8) G Dimitrov 6-4 7-6(7-3)

This match got a fair amount of hype, but it went surprisingly quickly — less than an hour and a half. And because Grigor Dimitrov was a semifinalist last year, he’ll fall from #19 to no better than #20. It might be lower. And if Dimitrov loses his Top Twenty spot, it will almost certainly be Ernests Gulbis who passes him.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) I Sijsling def. (Q) M Berrer 6-1 6-2

Igor Sijsling is ranked a mere #64, which is why he needed a wildcard into this very strong draw, but he still got a night match. And if the crowds keep supporting him like this, he just might have a Top Fifty shot here.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. Rosol/Seppi 6-4 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. Knowle/Peers 3-6 6-1 10-7

Buenos Aires

Singles – Second Round: (1) D Ferrer (WC) def. S Giraldo 6-4 7-6(7-1)

David Ferrer got off to another of his slow starts — then got it together and went up a set and a break, then had one of his letdowns and found himself down a break in the second set. He made it to the tiebreak, suffered a minibreak on the first point, and cruised the rest of the way. Hard to tell whether it was a good match or a bad…. Either way, it’s nothing that counts toward his ranking (he needs two more wins), but his chances of returning to #4 are looking better.

Singles – Second Round: (3) N Almagro def. D Gimeno-Traver 1-6 7-5 6-4

This took Nicolas Almagro almost two hours; it looks as if he’s still suffering some rust. Not good news, when he needs a title to add any points.

Singles – Second Round: (8) J Chardy def. A Dolgopolov 6-3 3-6 7-6(7-3)

Alexandr Dolgopolov remains stuck below #50. Jeremy Chardy needs one more win before the points start counting.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Granollers/M Lopez def. (WC) Bagnis/Delbonis 7-5 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Monroe/Stadler def. Haase/Kas 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Cuevas/Zeballos def. Gimeno-Traver/Montanes 6-4 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) M Gonzalez/Schwank def. Chardy/Dlouhy 2-6 6-4 10-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Dolgopolov/Starace def. Andujar/Bracciali 5-7 6-3 10-8

Memphis

Singles – Second Round: (4) Y Lu def. (Q) D Kudla 3-6 6-3 6-3

By the looks of things, Yen-Hsun Lu needed some time to adjust to the conditions here. But, having done so, he is getting very close to the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Al. Kuznetsov def. (8) M Kukushkin 2-6 6-3 7-6(7-1)

Alex Kuznetsov served for the match in the third set, had match point, and was broken. But then Mikhail Kukushkin — who had, it must be admitted, had a long trip here from Davis Cup — came apart in the tiebreak, losing the first four points. Which means Kukushkin will remain below #50.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Butorac/Klaasen def. Gabashvili/Kukushkin 6-2 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Junaid/Marx 6-0 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cermak/Elgin def. (WC) Harrison/Querrey 6-4 6-4
