THE U.S. OPEN TENNIS STARTS MONDAY MINUS RAFA THE DEFENDING CHAMPION

It simply isn't going to feel the same. It has been years since a U. S. Open has been so affected by injury. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out. So is former champion Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray is here, but he clearly isn't himself. Even Novak Djokovic seems to be a little bit off. It is clearly a wide-open field.

GOFFIN’S WINNING STREAK ENDS IN WINSTON-SALEM, ISNER WITHDRAWS BY RICKY DIMON

David Goffin saw his 25-match winning streak come to end at the hands of Jerzy Janowicz in the Winston-Salem Open quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Goffin, coming off three Challenger titles and his first ATP triumph in Kitzbuhel, succumbed to Janowicz 6-4, 6-4 after one hour and 17 minutes.

MEN’S TENNIS RESULTS FROM THE WINSTON-SALEM OPEN

After two and three-quarter hours, leading 6-5 in the tiebreak and serving, Donald Young double-faulted. Two points later, he was out of the tournament. Garcia-Lopez is one win away from the Top Thirty; Young loses his chance to rise above his current #46.

Roger Federer took care of Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open on Saturday night. Federer, who made similarly short 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 work of Raonic in the Wimbledon semis, needed just one hour and eight minutes to set up a final showdown against David Ferrer.

FEDERER BEATS MURRAY, JOINS RAONIC, FERRER, AND BENNETEAU IN CINCINNATI SFs BY RICKY DIMON

What a difference a year makes. In 2013, Roger Federer lost in the second round of Wimbledon, got unceremoniously bounced out of two clay-court events, then lost to nemesis Rafael Nadal in the Cincinnati quarterfinals. One summer later, Federer finished runner-up at Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup and he is now through to the Cincinnati semifinals.

Going into this, we couldn't help but think that this was a contest to see which of these two had slipped more from his prime. It was, obviously, Murray, who will not rise above #9 and therefore will need a withdrawal by Rafael Nadal or someone if he is to earn the #8 U. S. Open seed.
