Now here's a goofball thought: Forget required and optional events. Let players count their best 18 events -- but don't award any points for the early rounds of 250 point events. You have to reach at least the semifinal to earn any points. After all, that's the way it works in practice for the top players anyway.
The points don't count yet for David Ferrer, but he is the only seed left in the top half, so he has a real opportunity to change that. One more win might well take Nicolas Almagro back to #11.
Novak Djokovic will be #1 whatever happens here, but he's doing a good job of adding insurance points. This should have been the toughest of the second round matches, but Roger Federer handled it easily, which is promising. The loss means that Feliciano Lopez will not rise above #15 -- although there isn't much chance that he will fall.
