Editors note: September 9th, 2016 would have been Gussy’s 93rd Birthday. We here at 10sBalls will always feel blessed to have been friends with the courageous woman. She had a great spirit that stayed with her till her last breath. Gussy had a great wit and sense of humor. She was so bright yet so challenged by the mental illness that overcame her. Monday I drove past her last home, It was a dump of a small room in Hollywood. But Gussy’s strong will and spirit kept her going. She kept herself and her place clean and sparkling. She always smiled and tried to be pleasant to everyone. She truly was a talented athlete whose beauty and sex appeal made her come in second to her skills. She was the Anna K. of her day. And the next time you get dressed nicely and someone tells you that you got all “GUSSIED UP” you’ll know where that expression comes from.

 

Gussy and Lovey. What a team! A dynamic duo! A doubles partnership ? Only in our minds…. Oh what I would have done to be blessed enough to be on a court with Gussy ….. She passed away to the big grass court in the sky. A week ago today she watched the red carpet for the golden globes. She too now had a beautiful red carpet. Gussy loved fashion. So even though she missed the golden globes award show. She totally enjoyed the red carpet fashions and hair styles. She loved Tina Fey and Amy Poehler … She was so looking forward to the show. She missed it. I missed it. It had been a long week. Zonked out would have described us both….

So much has happened so fast. The global out pouring of obituaries and memories are unreal. Gussy would be pleased. The First Lady has a new hair style. Gussy’s favorite. BANGS!!!! Stan Musial passed away. I can see Gussy hanging on the fence in heaven waiting for him. She was great friends with so many baseball players. She loved Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Me too. We had a big age difference but we both shared a more than fifty year love of the game. We both played tennis. Taught tennis. Breathed tennis. Ok you get it we had an enormous common ground. Some have asked why I tried so hard to improve her life? It could have been me? I was blessed so many times over. Tennis for me has been more than a sport of a lifetime. It’s my life’s work. I found my friends thru tennis. I found my husband through tennis. I saw the world thru tennis. I’ve sat in players boxes all over the world. I’m blessed. My life’s goal is to see that no more golden oldie tennis players that played before the money was in the sport need our support. Retro active retirement fund. And dear Gussy rest in peace……
