TOUGH WEEK FOR AMERICAN MEN ENDS IN NEW YORK AND WINSTON-SALEM BY RICKY DIMON

American men can only hope they fare better in the U.S. Open main draw with their 11 participants than they did in qualifying earlier this week. Not a single American man managed to successfully navigate through three matches and punch a ticket into the field of 128. Two Americans had advanced to the final round, but neither one could finish the task on Friday.

It simply isn't going to feel the same. It has been years since a U. S. Open has been so affected by injury. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out. So is former champion Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray is here, but he clearly isn't himself. Even Novak Djokovic seems to be a little bit off. It is clearly a wide-open field.

David Goffin saw his 25-match winning streak come to end at the hands of Jerzy Janowicz in the Winston-Salem Open quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Goffin, coming off three Challenger titles and his first ATP triumph in Kitzbuhel, succumbed to Janowicz 6-4, 6-4 after one hour and 17 minutes.

The official draw ceremony was held on Thursday for the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam event of the season. Six Canadians earned direct entry into the singles draws including Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC), Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON), and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC).
