HOW THE US OPEN TENNIS DRAWS LOOK FOR THE CANADIANS , BOUCHARD , RAONIC , DANCEVIC , POSPISIL

THE TABLE IS SET FOR THE U.S. OPEN

The official draw ceremony was held on Thursday for the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam event of the season. Six Canadians earned direct entry into the singles draws including Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC), Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON), and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC).

On the men’s side, Raonic is seeded fifth in the draw. He will face a qualifier in the opening round. Placed in the top half of the draw, Raonic could meet Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the fourth round. The 23-year-old Canadian enjoyed a successful summer hard court season and his results allowed him to finish first in the Emirates U.S. Open Series Bonus Challenge. For his part, Pospisil will play world no. 87 Simone Bolelli of Italy in the first round. He will also team up with American Jack Sock in doubles. The pair won Wimbledon earlier this summer in their first tournament as a team. Dancevic will take on no. 32 seed Joao Sousa of Portugal.

On the women’s side, Bouchard, who is the only WTA player to reach the semifinals of the first three Grand Slam tournaments of 2014, will open against Olga Govortsova of Belarus. The 20-year-old is seeded seventh and is in the same section of the draw as Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who she could face in the quarter-finals. Fichman will try and reach the second round of a Major for the first time when she faces off against world no. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Wozniak will play Japanese Kurumi Nara in the opening round. Wozniak won their only previous meeting in 2012 at Doha.

Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC) and Peter Polansky (Thornhill, ON) remain in contention for a main draw spot as they enter the final stage of qualifying.

LA TABLE EST MISE POUR LES INTERNATIONAUX DES ÉTATS-UNIS

C’est aujourd’hui qu’avait lieu le tirage des tableaux principaux des Internationaux des États-Unis. Au total, six Canadiens ont été admis directement aux grands tableaux du simple, soit Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC) et Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) et Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC).

Chez les hommes, Raonic, 5e tête de série du tournoi, sera opposé d’entrée de jeu à un joueur issu des qualifications. Placé dans le haut du tableau, il pourrait rencontrer le Japonais Kei Nishikori au quatrième tour. Raonic a connu une excellente saison préparatoire comme en témoigne sa pôle position confirmée au classement « Emirates Airline US Open Series ». Popsipil, pour sa part, affrontera l’Italien Simone Bolelli, 87e joueur mondial. L’athlète de 24 ans sera également de l’épreuve du double en compagnie de l’Américain Jack Sock. Le tandem canado-américain avait causé toute une surprise en raflant le titre à Wimbledon alors que les deux hommes faisaient équipe pour une première fois. Finalement, Dancevic fera face au Portugais Joao Sousa, 32e tête de série.

Chez les femmes, Bouchard, qui est la seule joueuse de la WTA à avoir atteint le carré d’as des trois premières étapes du Grand Chelem de 2014, croisera le fer avec la Bélarussienne Olga Govortsova au premier tour. La Canadienne est la 7e tête de série et se trouve dans la partie du tableau de la Tchèque Petra Kvitova, championne de Wimbledon, qu’elle pourrait affronter en quart de finale. Fichman tentera de se qualifier pour le deuxième tour d’un tournoi d’un Grand Chelem pour la première fois de sa carrière, mais elle aura la lourde tâche de se départir de la Polonaise Agnieszka Radwanska, cinquième joueuse mondiale. Wozniak, quant à elle, sera opposée à la Japonaise Kurumi Nara. Wozniak était sortie gagnante du seul affrontement entre les deux joueuses à Doha, en 2012.
