Twas the night before Easter and all of the juniors were sleeping, nestled snuggly in bed as they all anxiously awaited the Easter Bowl Championship ahead. This Sunday marks the 45th anniversary of the Easter Bowl USTA National Championship. The tournament begins on the 8th and continues through the 15th. Many U.S. chammpions, including grand slam winners, got their start at this tournament–like Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. This year the tournament returns to Rancho Mirage, California. As for Davis Cup quarterfinals news, Spain is still in the lead against Austria but Austria finally gained a point, putting them 2:1. France is 1:2 against the USA, while both the Czech Republic and Argentina are 1 point ahead of their opponets, both at 2:1. 45th Annual Easter Bowl USTA Junior Spring National Championships Begins Sunday

Last year’s girls’ 18s champion and future UCLA Bruin Kyle McPhillips will return to defend her title as the 45th annual Easter Bowl USTA Spring Nationals kicks off on Sunday.

The 18s event is an ITF Grade I level tournament and closed to the top American players. Gold, silver and bronze balls will be awarded in the boys and girls’ 14s and 16s nationals. Australian Open singles and doubles champion Taylor Townsend of Stockbridge, Ga., is the top-seeded player in the girls’ 18s and Mitchell Krueger the No. 1-seeded player in the boys’ 18s. The Humble Rafa!

Richard Evans recently mentioned a less known story about Rafael Nadal in his article: Marc Lopez, Rafa’s close friend who played doubles with Nadal on Wednesday night, smashed a racket when the pair were playing a doubles match here a couple of years ago. At practice the next day, Nadal told Lopez, “Don’t ever do that again or we won’t play together anymore.” Lopez looked at him as if he was joking. “No, I’m serious,” Rafa shot back. “Don’t ever do it again.” [Read More]

Roger Federer

Watching Roger Federer play is truly inspiring. The way he moves on the court and makes every shot look so easy makes me want to get out on the court and do the same (although most of the time I’m not quite as successful). My favorite shot of Rogers’ is his one handed backhand. He easily has one of best one handed backhands in tennis right now and is one of the smoothest I can remember. I hit a one handed backhand as well, so watching Roger hit his teaches me the footwork and balance I need to hit a strong shot. [Read More]
