It’s almost here – the start of the last Slam of the year, and the organisers have given us a fine kick-off, with picks for wins on the big courts in bold.
The first set was all about Petra Kvitova playing like we know she can.
This was a battle of the scrambling wounded. Victoria Azarenka had a bandage running up most of her leg; Serena Williams had both ankles taped.
The organizers here set their schedule very carefully, and we're going to follow their lead.
Victoria Azarenka will probably find out on Friday whether she gets to keep the #1 ranking.
At least Petra Kvitova arrived. That was a good start. And, given that her Saturday opponent was ranked below #100, that was close to a guaranteed win.
By the looks of things, Sara Errani was lucky to have had a soft match the round before.
If you look at the qualifying results here, there is a very noteworthy name missing. Francesca Schiavone, the #1 qualifying seed, went out early.
Caroline Wozniacki has yet another disappointing result. She will fall to no better than #8.
Baltacha was defending big points but Samantha Stosur took her out.
