Wimbledon - Women Results and Updates

Wimbledon

Singles – First Round: Tamira Paszek def. (7) Caroline Wozniacki 5-7 7-6(7-4) 6-4

This time, they had to close the roof. It started drizzling early. (They ended up canceling a bunch of matches, especially in doubles.) It seemed as if it would rain on Tamira Paszek’s parade, too, because she blew chances to win the first set. She had some trouble serving it out in the third, too, but she managed to go on the offensive after that. She now has six straight grass wins.

And Caroline Wozniacki has yet another disappointing result. She will fall to no better than #8. Which means that Angelique Kerber will very likely reach a new high of #7.

As for Paszek, she was a quarterfinalist last year, so she still has a lot of defending to do. But this should keep her above #60.

Singles – First Round: (10) Sara Errani def. (Q) Coco Vandeweghe 6-1 6-3

This may not have been the shortest match resumption in history, but it has to be up there. And it was minimal in terms of effort, too. Sara Errani showed up one point away from victory — and watched Coco Vandeweghe double-fault. That was it. One report said it took seven seconds.

Singles – First Round: Klara Zakopalova def. (13) Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-1

You just never know what to expect from Dominika Cibulkova these days…. She was defending quarterfinalist points, so she is certain to fall; we would have thought this would cost her her Top Fifteen ranking, but the next several players are also out, so she might stay above that mark. Not by much, though. Klara Zakopalova still has points to defend, but a Top Thirty spot is looking very possible.

Singles – First Round: (14) Ana Ivanovic def. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3 3-6 6-3

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez will fall below #60 — probably well below. Ana Ivanovic is very likely, although not quite certain, to rise to #13.

Singles – First Round: (22) Julia Goerges def. Shahar Peer 6-2 6-2

Shahar Peer wasn’t defending anything, so she will probably stay within a spot or two of #50.

Singles – First Round: Alize Cornet def. Nina Bratchikova 6-0 7-6(7-1)

Alize Cornet is up to about #55 — too bad it’s too late to get direct Olympic entry, but of course she is in anyway.

Singles – First Round: Kateryna Bondarenko def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 5-7 6-3 6-3

Kimiko Date-Krumm made the second round last year, so she will fall to around #90. It may not mean much; her team told her not to play due to injury, so just making it through three sets is a triumph of sorts. She has said she will be back next year, but it’s going to be hard for her to get in if she can’t start winning some matches….

Singles – First Round: Olga Govortsova def. (Q) Annika Beck 6-3 3-6 6-3

Olga Govortsova ought to rise above #85.

Singles – First Round: Anastasia Yakimova def. Mandy Minella 4-6 6-3 6-3

Mandy Minella will fall below #85.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-1

Agnieszka Radwanska now needs only one more win to formally clinch the #3 ranking. And she still has an outside shot to go higher.

Singles – Second Round: Arantxa Rus def. (5) Samantha Stosur 6-2 0-6 6-4

Samantha Stosur looked really upset with herself in the first set. Then she got herself in order in the second — then, obviously, slipped up again. She still has a good shot at rising to #4, and is effectively certain to stay Top Five, but she remains her own worst enemy on grass.

Singles – Second Round: Sorana Cirstea def. (11) Li Na 6-3 6-4

Wimbledon looked like Li Na’s big chance to get back into the Top Ten, but obviously not. She won’t rise above #11.

Singles – Second Round: (12) Vera Zvonareva def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1 3-6 6-1

Vera Zvonareva’s shoulder can’t be enjoying these marathons, but she keeps surviving somehow. She has now defended her points, but she needs at least two more wins to climb above #12. One more would take her past Li Na to (probably) #11.

Singles – Second Round: (15) Sabine Lisicki def. Bojana Jovanovski 3-6 6-2 8-6

Sabine Lisicki still needs more to stay Top Twenty. The good news is, she faces an unseeded opponent next. The bad news is, even that isn’t likely to be enough.

Singles – Second Round: (17) Maria Kirilenko def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-1 6-2

Maria Kirilenko has defended her points; her Top Twenty ranking now looks very safe. She may well rise a spot or two. Lourdes Dominguez Lino will probably fall below #75.

Singles – Second Round: Sloane Stephens def. (23) Petra Cetkovska 7-6(8-6) 4-6 6-3

This could well cost Petra Cetkovska her Top Thirty spot; she was defending fourth round points. Sloane Stephens now looks very likely to hit the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (30) Peng Shuai def. Ayumi Morita 7-6(7-4) 6-3

One more win might put Peng Shuai back in the Top Thirty, although we’d guess she will need two.

Singles – Second Round: Heather Watson def. Jamie Hampton 6-1 6-4

Earlier this year, we thought Heather Watson was on her way to becoming Britain’s #1 player. It didn’t happen that time, but it’s looking more and more likely now. She is firmly in the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Hsieh Su-Wei def. Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-4 6-1

Hsieh Su-Wei is up to around #55. Her return to singles action really is going better than her first career.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Camila Giorgi def. Anna Tatishvili 6-3 6-1

Anna Tatishvili is bound below #80, but Camila Giorgi will rise from #145 to around #110.

Singles – Second Round: Kim Clijsters def. Andrea Hlavackova 6-3 6-3

No question, now, about whether Kim Clijsters will be Top Forty. Two more wins and she is Top Thirty.

Doubles – First Round: (7) Shvedova/Voskoboeva def. Halep/Wozniak 6-1 6-0

Doubles – First Round: (15) Begu/Niculescu def. Baltacha/Keothavong 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Pennetta/Schiavone def. Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-2 5-7 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Dekmeijere/Lepchenko def. Arvidsson/Larsson 7-6(7-3) 3-6 6-3

Doubles – First Round: (Q) Lucic/Savinykh def. (WC) Moore/South 4-6 6-4 6-1
