In 2013, American men fared historically bad at Grand Slams. Not a single one reached the fourth round of any major--not even at the U.S. Open. The jury is still out for the American contingent in Flushing Meadows this time around, but early returns are decent at best.
It's no secret that we are in the midst of a rough patch for American men's tennis--certainly on the singles front. The trials and tribulations of the United States contingent are well-documented. It has been more than a decade since an American man won a Grand Slam title (Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open).
At 33 years old, perhaps it would not have been appropriate if Roger Federer had not been required to work hard for a win on his birthday. Well, he certainly had to do just that in what was his second three-setter in as many days at the Rogers Cup.
It was a surprising day of action for the American contingent at the Rogers Cup on Monday. John Isner, Tim Smyczek, and Michael Russell took the court, with only Isner (vs. Ivan Dodig) being a considerable favorite. As it turned out, however, only Isner took a loss.
Jack Sock returned to action on Tuesday, just two days after capping off a dream doubles run at Wimbledon with a title-clinching, five-set victory over Bob and Mike Bryan with partner Vasek Pospisil.
Daniel Kosakowski has the lead for the USTA's main-draw wild card into the French Open after reaching the semifinals of the Sarasota Challenger. Kosakowski scored straight-set wins over Michael Russell, James McGee, and James Ward before falling to Nick Kyrgios on Saturday.
The field for the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger was announced Thursday morning by tournament director Karen Vogter, as two former champions and nine players inside the top 150 will make the trip to the $50,000 event, the last stop on the Har-Tru USTA Pro Circuit Wild Card Challenge, where players compete for a spot at the French Open.

Top seed Tommy Haas continued to break barriers at age 35, advancing in his opening match over Wayne Odesnik in well under an hour. "With injuries, I lost probably three or four years of my career," said the 12th-ranked Haas.
Third seed Tommy Robredo led a trio of Spaniard to opening win, with the veteran starting with a defeat of compatriot Pablo Carreno 6-4, 6-4. Pablo Andujar followed suit over Argentine 2013 quarter-finalist Federico Delbonis 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 while fifth seed Marcel Granollers won his first clay match of the season, beating Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Fans got a taste of Tim Smyczek during the 2013 version of the US Open when he was the last American man standing by reaching the third round. The Milwaukeean is hoping for a great reception when he participates in "Serves for Summit," a charity event benefiting the Summit Educational Association in the area.
