Jack Sock returned to action on Tuesday, just two days after capping off a dream doubles run at Wimbledon with a title-clinching, five-set victory over Bob and Mike Bryan with partner Vasek Pospisil. Sock continued his winning ways, this time on the singles court, with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of fellow American Alex Kuznetsov during first-round action in Newport. In Bastad, meanwhile, Pablo Cuevas upset Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-2.

Newport summary

Two other Americans joined Sock in the second round of the U.S. Hall of Fame Tennis Championships; John Isner beat countryman Wayne Odesnik 6-3, 7-6(6) and Austin Krajicek–Isner’s next opponent–won an all-American battle with Tim Smyczek 7-6(7), 6-1. In other notable results, 2013 champion Nicolas Mahut kicked off his title defense with a 7-6(1), 6-4 victory over Facundo Arguello and Lleyton Hewitt overcame Ryan Harrison 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

“I’ve had a lot of success here, especially the last three years,” Isner, who captured the title in 2011 and 2012, said after beating Odesnik. “I don’t know of a tournament where I’ve won 14 of 15 matches. That’s pretty impressive. I’m glad that I’m here and hopefully I can keep going. I’ve had good memories here in the past.”

Bastad summary

Chardy was the only seed to fall at the SkiStar Swedish Open, but some other big names fell by the wayside on Tuesday. Jiri Vesely, who reached the Wimbledon third round before falling to Nick Kyrgios, succumbed to Albert Ramos 7-5, 6-2. Dustin Brown lost a tough opening-round matchup with Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4. Mikhail Kukushkin, who took a set off Rafael Nadal in round three at the All-England Club, bowed out to Elias Ymer 6-3, 7-5. Among others advancing to the last 16 were Victor Hanescu (d. Pablo Andujar) and seventh-seeded Carlos Berlocq (d. Julian Reister).
