****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Buenos Aires

Third seed Tommy Robredo led a trio of Spaniard to opening win, with the veteran starting with a defeat of compatriot Pablo Carreno 6-4, 6-4. Pablo Andujar followed suit over Argentine 2013 quarter-finalist Federico Delbonis 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 while fifth seed Marcel Granollers won his first clay match of the season, beating Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

The only setback for the Spaniards was the loss of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who went down to 108th-ranked wild card Guido Pella of Argentina 7-6(6), 6-4. Argentine Carlos Berlocq started with a win over Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-4, 6-2.

Argentine Maximo Gonzalez will face two-time champion David Ferrer in the first round after coming through qualifying with a win lasting for more than three hours.

Memphis

A pair of Australians lost in opening-day play at the slimmed-down event, now living among the crowd of 250-level tournaments on the ATP. The one-time 500 which had depended for more than a decade of the playing presence of Andy Roddick to put bums on seats, is facing the real world for the second year without a sponsor. The event has only managed to sign holder Kei Nishikori into a weak field and began getting it’s money’s worth when it sent the Japanese off on a hospital visit.

On court, Tim Smyczek beat Australian teenaged prospect Nick Kyrgios 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 while Czech Jiri Vesely accounted for fifth seed Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-2, marking the third loss in a for for the Aussie becoming known as an on-court hothead. A year ago, Matosevic made a surprise semi-final appearance; it was the second Tour-level win for Vesely.

American journeyman Michael Russell came from a set down to earn his first season win, upsetting of Polish seventh seed Michal Przysiezny 3-6, 6-3. 6-1

Rotterdam

Third seed Tomas Berdych picked reached the second round 6-3, 6-3 over Italian Andreas Seppi. The Czech who helped his nation into the Davis Cup quarter-finals in Ostrava, made a winning start to the winter ATP indoor season as he dispatched Seppi for the sixth time in eight meetings.

The pair of players are Rotterdam veterans, with 2012 semi-finalist Berdych making his eighth appearance and Seppi playing for the seventh time. Berdych went though in 66 minutes with nine aces and conversions on seven of 10 break chances. The Czech who finished in the quarter-finals or better in 15 of 23 tournaments last season, has not won a title since late 2012.

French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu, playing for the second straight week in a main draw, defeated Croatian Ivan Dodig 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in two and a quarter hours. German Michael Berrer beat the first Dutchman of the week as he put out Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed a comeback, but started with a win over German Florian Mayer 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 while Philipp Kohlschreiber earned German revenge by beating qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 7-
