The first week of Wimbledon has come and gone and the second will begin without either Williams sister.( in singles , they are playing doubles together , and have a second round match on Monday) . Venus Williams lost arguably the best match of the women's tournament so far, as she went down to Petra Kvitova 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-5 on Friday.
The Championships’ venue was growing darker, waiting for a Saturday filled with rain to come to an end. (The outer courts have no lights.) The scheduled play had been delayed for most of the day because of the rain. Those last matches were being frantically conducted into the twilight, trying for some catch up.
Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, Que.) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ont.) have both earned a place in the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in their careers following third-round victories over Andrea Petkovic of Germany and Lukasz Kubot of Poland respectively on a rain-soaked Saturday in London.
It’s the first Thursday of that fortnight known as The Championships. As surprising as this may be to tennis followers, it rained during competition at Wimbledon. It was the end of the day and only a few matches were held in tennis limbo on the women’s side.
Whilst there was not as much carnage on the lush green grass of SW19 as last year, there were still some impressive names who fell.
Here are some more awesome EPA photos from Wimbledon.
Tradition holds that on the first Tuesday of The Championships, the initial match that is contended on Centre Court feature the Ladies Champion from the previous year. Last year, Marion Bartoli laid claim to the Venus Rosewater Dish when she defeated Sabine Lisicki, 6-1, 6-4.
A first-round loss at Roland Garros in the wake of her shock dumping by golfer fiance Rory McIlroy did not bother Caroline Wozniacki, who quickly headed off to Miami for partying with tennis friend Serena Williams earlier in the month.
This past weekend Michaela Krajicek , Misa to her family & friends said yes to the marriage proposal done on court by her sweet and handsome beau of this past year. Martin Emmrich from Germany is the lucky guy. He currently holds the world ATP dubs ranking of 50.
It was Maria Sharapova holding the trophy at the finish of the women’s singles at Roland Garros. It was the second longest women’s final in the history of the tournament. Sharapova and her opponent Simona Halep traded the lead throughout the long sets. It was an extraordinarily exciting final after last year’s romp by Serena Williams.
Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep have a date on Saturday. They will meet in the women’s singles final.
Perhaps it's just as well this country took a sabbatical at the French Open this year. With American men not surviving the second round, Venus and Serena losing in the quarters and Jennifer Capriati embarrassed in her semifinal, the stars and stripes hung at half-staff in a city where ambivalence to our flag would be considered progress.
Here are today's photos of those who won and lost from the French Open.
For close to twenty years, the face of American tennis has been Venus and Serena Williams. My mind wanders back to the silhouettes of two little girls scampering around the court, beads woven into their hair clacking in cadence to some faraway drum that was audible only to the two of them.
With the French Open just starting, we chose some of the best shots for today. Enjoy!
