Rafael Nadal struggled in his first grass-court match of the season but managed to get the job done during second-round action at the Mercedes Cup on Thursday.

The Mutua Madrid Open had it all on Wednesday. A marathon in a marquee women's matchup (Serena Williams saved three match points in a win over Victoria Azarenka), hometown dominance (five Spanish men advanced to the last 16, including upsets by Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco), and a 3:00 a.m. finish (Andy Murray vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber).
Well now that all depends on your point of view really. In the red corner (we would say pink, but we’re not in the mood for stereotypes this evening!) we had Maria Sharapova weather a comeback from the feisty Caroline Garcia.
After the loaded schedule of Sunday, it was nice to be almost able to take a breath before Madrid whips up another storm on Tuesday.
The Australian Open has come and gone, with the Happy Slam giving way to what is often perceived as a not-so-happy month in the tennis world. In a sense, we are in the calm after the storm. Then again, this is also the beginning of what is by far the busiest month on tour—not in terms of quality, of course, but without question in quantity.

I had the opportunity to attend six ATP tournaments in 2014—five in the United States and also the World Tour Finals in London. With the offseason finally upon us, it’s time to take a look back at the most memorable match I witnessed at each of those six events. From the high-quality, to the bizarre, to the controversial, I saw it all this year.
One week after his wife, Jelena, gave birth to their first child, Stefan, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic returned to action with a 6-3, 6-4 second-round win Tuesday over Philipp Kohlschreiber at the BNP Paribas Masters.
No matter that the two 2012 U.S. Open finalists were in the same section of the bracket this time around. At the beginning of the tournament, a rematch in the quarterfinals was far from a guarantee. After all, Novak Djokovic found himself near John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the draw while Andy Murray landed in the same eighth as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
By the looks of things, Novak Djokovic's little summer vacation is over, and he's back at work. He leaves Sam Querrey still a little below the Top Fifty -- but at least Querrey seems finally to be going in the right direction.
The first full day of men's second-round action at the U.S. Open will take place on Thursday. Among those in action are former champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, who are still on a collision course for the quarterfinals. Djokovic is going up against Paul-Henri Mathieu while Murray is facing Matthias Bachinger.
Roger Federer took care of Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open on Saturday night. Federer, who made similarly short 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 work of Raonic in the Wimbledon semis, needed just one hour and eight minutes to set up a final showdown against David Ferrer.
Saturday's semifinal lineup in Hamburg is a surprising one, but also one that the German faithful will greet with delight. Each of the two matches will have a player representing the host nation, as both Alexander Zverev and Philipp Kohlschreiber continued their runs on Friday.
It was another fantastic day of tennis @theboodles. It was really everything a day of lawn tennis should be. It has something to offer for everyone. What a truly glorious wonderful place and event.
