One week after his wife, Jelena, gave birth to their first child, Stefan, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic returned to action with a 6-3, 6-4 second-round win Tuesday over Philipp Kohlschreiber at the BNP Paribas Masters.

“It feels great! It’s different, obviously,” Djokovic told Sky Sports. “I’m trying to take as much positive energy as I can from what’s happened in the past few weeks. I’m very proud to be a father and I’m very proud of my wife for handling the birth in a great way. She’s back home recovering now, with our little boy. This was my first match as a father and it can only inspire me to play my best tennis.”

Djokovic is the defending champion at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament and is looking to lift the trophy for the third time as he bids to stay ahead of Roger Federer in the battle to finish year-end World No. 1.

“It’s not the first time that I’ve been in this particular situation,” said Djokovic. “I’ve been fighting for No. 1 the past couple of years with Nadal and Federer. I know what I need to do and I’ll try to keep things simple. Just focus my attention on my own matches. I can’t affect Federer’s matches, but I can win as much as I can/ If I keep on winning and performing well, like I did today, then I think I have a good chance. But Roger, on the other hand, is playing some fantastic tennis. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Djokovic recorded his sixth win in seven meetings with Kohlschreiber, converting three of his seven break point chances to prevail in 85 minutes. The 27 year old defeated David Ferrer in the Paris final last year, adding to his 2009 triumph in the French capital (d. Monfils).

Djokovic claimed his 53rd win of the season in which he has won five ATP World Tour titles. The right-hander has already won three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophies in Indian Wells, Miami and Rome, in addition to success at Wimbledon and Beijing.

Frenchman Lucas Pouille recorded just his second tour-level win as he defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-1, 6-4. The 20 year old limited Karlovic to just five aces, closing his season’s total at 1,185, and broke the 6’11 Croatian three times to advance in 68 minutes.

“From the start I was able to return well,” said Pouille. “I was able to return his first serves and second serves, so he was under pressure. I could guess when I saw him toss the ball where he was going to serve, so this is why I didn’t miss many first serves or I didn’t get aced too much. I was able to anticipate and to return his serve.

“It means a lot. I’m very happy. This year was quite difficult because I was injured twice for two months. So it was very difficult.”

Kevin Anderson struck 12 aces as he beat Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 7-6(8) in just under two hours. The 28-year-old South African claimed his 37th win of the season and goes on to face Stan Wawrinka or Dominic Thiem.
