Monday in Madrid… oh and Munich!

After the loaded schedule of Sunday, it was nice to be almost able to take a breath before Madrid whips up another storm on Tuesday.

After some pretty major upsets on Sunday (World No. 2 Simona Halep, Stuttgart champion Angelique Kerber, Venus Williams) things progressed almost sedately, although there were amused observations of the poor guy whose job it is to hurl clay around the court before the night session, almost savagely from his little wheelbarrow, before the first of the night matches with Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens. Another comfortable win in the end, and it is great to see Stephens returning to some form – with US women’s tennis looking

With some of the big ATP names still to even play, consider a thought for Andy Murray and especially Philipp Kohlschreiber. They had to play their postponed final today, and a damn good display of tennis it was. The German put up a great fight, just being edged out of a tiebreak in the first set, leveling the match before being edged out (again) in the third set.

But maybe after seeing the bat-winged BMW as a prize (which just made us think of Back to the Future) the sight of Mr Murray in Lederhosen was something else. But you have to feel sorry for Kohlschreiber who may well end up playing Murray on Wednesday or Thursday as he has his first round match tomorrow.

We are looking out for one of our favourites Ana Ivanovic. Last year she really impressed with far more aggression than we’d seen and it was justly rewarded with a spin back up the rankings.

But after a decent start with the Brisbane final, an argument with a bathroom door and a broken tow has seen her struggle to get back to form, and losing her opener in Stuttgart (another stacked field) certainly didn’t help.

She almost was a goner n the first Saturday, while we were still packing odds and ends for the trip across the sea in ye olde galleon! She faces one of the WTA Rising Stars Elina Svitolina and this match should be a corker.

Also on our list is defending champion Maria Sharapova. Surely Stuttgart looks to have been just a blip after her commanding win o Sunday, and with nearest rival Halep probably on her way to Rome.

Our pick of the men’s matches is Grigor Dimitrov v Donald Young. The American has been enjoying a decent run on form that earned him his selection to the Davis Cup team in February on merit ahead of Steve Johnson, who had been turning in some solid results. Dimitrov has seemed to regain a bit of confidence after a bit of a slump following the Australian Open, and is very beatable in our eyes. This could be one of the potential upsets of the men’s side early doors.

The tournament is warming up nicely. But where is the sun? Watch this space.
