Rafael Nadal isn't giving Novak Djokovic much opportunity in the contest for #1 / This still isn't enough points to make any difference to Ana Ivanovic -- but the win moves her to 2-0, which obviously makes it very likely that she will reach the semifinal here.
As widely predicted, Caroline Wozniacki has officially announced her new coach for the beginning of the 2014 season will be the experienced Swede Thomas Hogstedt who previously worked with the current world no.3 and no.4, Li Na and Maria Sharapova.
Li Na became the first Asia player to reach the No. 3 year-end ranking, but didn't have any energy left in the third set of her loss to Serena Williams.
With 11 titles to her name in 2013, including two Grand Slam event titles and the WTA Championships, it is stating the blindingly obvious to say Serena Williams is by far the most dominant force in women’s tennis.
Serena Williams was forced to battle both new world no.3 Li Na and her own exhaustion to win a fourth WTA Championships title in Istanbul.
Li Na: "At the start of the match, maybe I was feeling too excited. So after one set and a half I felt like I had no more energy left."
Initially it seemed that Serena Williams was the one with the physical problems. Then -- Li Na turned into the player who hadn't even won a set against Serena since 2009. Afterward, the champion said, "I can't believe I won, I was so tired. Did I really win?
What can we say except, "Another bad day at the office for Petra Kvitova"? These were the matches she was winning two years ago.... Instead, she ends another disappointing year stuck at #6.

Victoria Azarenka's physical problems apparently were real. This was a contest for a semifinal spot, and it was really not very interesting -- Li Na said later that she thought Azarenka (who hurt her back in the first set, but who was already in trouble) would retire from the match.
Piotr Wozniacki has spent his last tournament as coach of his daughter Caroline and reports a big-name full time replacement will be named next week.
Jelena Jankovic is 1-1, which means she is tied in matches with Victoria Azarenka (although she has a better record in sets). The remaining White Group matchs are Li versus Azarenka and Jankovic versus Errani.
Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, who is dealing with a left foot injury, says main goal is to "play healthy for Serbia in Davis Cup final." . . . Ryan Harrison caught viral pneumonia while playing in Asia and when he arrived in Vienna to play the ATP tournament there he couldn't get out of bed.
Hardly a surprise, but it leaves Serena 2-0, meaning she is all but sure to make the semifinal. Agnieszka Radwanska is 0-2, which means she still hasn't overtaken Maria Sharapova in the contest for #3; she needs a win to take the #3 spot.
Maria Sharapova's months-long shoulder injury absence from the WTA is starting to take on a life of its own - at least in Bulgaria, the home country of boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov.
