As widely predicted, Caroline Wozniacki has officially announced her new coach for the beginning of the 2014 season will be the experienced Swede Thomas Hogstedt who previously worked with the current world no.3 and no.4, Li Na and Maria Sharapova.

The news was exclusively revealed in the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet and 23 year-old Wozniacki, still the youngest player in the WTA’s current top ten despite a year viewed by many as disappointing said: “I am excited to start training with Thomas.

“I am ready to develop my game and to work harder than ever before. And I know that when I delivered the job, so I will also be a player who can win a Grand Slam title.”

The contract is provisionally until the end of 2014 and comes with the absolute blessing of tenth ranked Wozniacki’s father Piotr, known to be a close friend and confidante of Hogstedt. Wozniacki Snr. has twice previously maintained he would be stepping down as his daughter’s main coach, after the appointment of Spaniard Ricardo Sanchez and former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson.

In both cases the relationship lasted just a few months with both coaches maintaining it was difficult to work with the incessant presence of former professional soccer player Piotr who has coached his daughter since childhood.

Hogstedt has taken an extended break since splitting with Sharapova after her early Wimbledon exit in late June but is clearly ready to return to work. “I look forward to my new challenge as coach of Caroline and to improve her game,” said the 50 year-old Swede. “Together we will try to reach a level where she can win a Grand Slam.”

John Tobias, Wozniacki’s agent with Lagardere Unlimited, is full of optimism that this liaison will propel his client back towards the elite of the WTA rankings. Two weeks ago she concluded her season by winning her first title of 2013 at the Luxembourg Open and Tobias is optimistic his client is headed back towards the top five of the women’s game.

“Let’s remember Caroline is still the youngest player in the top ten and she is still at the beginning of his career,” said Tobias. “She has four or five years to get the maximum out of their potential.”

Wozniacki is currently on vacation in Dubai after turning down the opportunity to contest this week’s WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia. She served as an alternate at last week’s TEB BNP Paribas sponsored WTA Championships in Istanbul but was not called upon to play.
