Although the tennis world’s current star names such Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were hired for undisclosed figures believed to be in excess of $2 million each for their services in the International Tennis Premier League in Sunday’s Dubai-based draft...
Gael Monfils, who is committed to play in the BB&T Atlanta Open for the first time in 2014 and is excited about it: “I like to play in front of anybody. I like to play for a full crowd and I like to play on the American hard courts. If the crowd gets into the action, that makes it even better. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the fans in Atlanta for the first time.”
Juan Martin Del Potro is still feeling pain in the wrist injury that hampered him at last month’s Australian Open and subsequently sent him for consultations and treatment at the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Because Rotterdam is the largest and strongest of this week's events, we are planning our schedule around it. We will send each day's edition when we are satisfied with the Rotterdam material. This means that we will be covering the late matches from Buenos Aires and (especially) Memphis in the next day's edition.
Gael Monfils really does like playing in France. And indoor hardcourts. This was career final #21. He has won only five of them. Four of the titles (Metz 2009, Montpellier 2010, Stockholm 2011, and now Montpellier 2013) have been on indoor hardcourts, and three (all but Stockholm 2011) have been in France. Nadal faces an interesting first round in a hot Bernard Tomic, but Rafa got plenty of prep in winning Doha and should be ready for the Aussie. If it happens, his third round match against Monfils could be a tougher challenge. Monfils was able to take a set in the finals of Doha.
Roger Federer on what he learned from his five-set loss to former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the 2003 Davis Cup semifinals: “I think it really proved to me that I could play great tennis not just for a set, two sets, but three sets or maybe even longer against the toughest guys out there,” Federer said of his five-set loss.
