****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Australian Open

Singles – Third Round: (1) Rafael Nadal def. (25) Gael Monfils 6-1 6-2 6-3

So much for the potentially dramatic rematch of the Doha final. Gael Monfils will almost certainly return to the Top Thirty, but just barely.

Singles – Third Round: (4) Andy Murray def. (26) Feliciano Lopez 7-6(7-2) 6-4 6-2

Andy Murray really does seem finally to have gotten things to click. He blocks Feliciano Lopez’s Top 25 return; the Spaniard will likely be #26.

Singles – Third Round: (6) Roger Federer def. Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-2 6-2 6-3

Roger Federer continues to cruise, but he hasn’t really faced much opposition yet; he has to face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next, and he has to win that to have any chance of ending up above #8.

Singles – Third Round: (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. (18) Gilles Simon 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-2

And Tsonga, so far, has looked very solid — although the amazing thing is that Gilles Simon, who is really hurting, made it this far. Simon will not rise above his current #19; he may fall.

Singles – Third Round: (22) Grigor Dimitrov def. (11) Milos Raonic 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6(12-10)

This is big on two counts. First, it is very likely to put Grigor Dimitrov in the Top Twenty (the only other serious contender remaining is Kevin Anderson, who needs to beat Tomas Berdych to have a shot), and second, it means no Top Ten ranking for Milos Raonic. Raonic will almost certainly stay #11, which means that Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are almost certain to stay Top Ten.

Singles – Third Round: (16) Kei Nishikori def. Donald Young 7-5 6-1 6-0

Out goes the last American man in the draw. But that’s hardly news, these days…. Kei Nishikori has defended his points, but because others have added, he needs one more win to hang onto his #17 ranking.

Singles – Third Round: Roberto Bautista Agut def. (27) Benoit Paire 6-2 6-1 6-4

Roberto Bautista Agut has been very quietly posting excellent results lately. He finds himself on the brink of the Top Fifty. Benoit Paire, despite this rather tame loss, looks set to hit the Top 25.

Singles – Third Round: Stephane Robert def. Martin Klizan 6-0 7-6(7-2) 6-4

One way or another, this was sure to put a Lucky Loser in the fourth round. But surely most people expected the Lucky Loser to be Martin Klizan, who is younger, higher-ranked, and has had a better career. It’s pretty amazing for 33-year-old Stephane Robert, who last year lost in the opening round of qualifying; this is the biggest result he has by a factor of two and a half, and increases his point total by about 40%. #119 coming in, he’ll rise to around #75. Which means a lot fewer qualifying draws and a lot more direct entries into events.

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan def. Robin Haase/Christopher Kas 6-3 6-2

This featured three of last year’s finalists (the Bryans and Robin Haase), but changing partners didn’t help Haase’s result. The 2013 Australian Open was (we’re not kidding about this) 89% of Haase’s doubles points; he had this final, plus a few quarterfinals at 250 point events, and that’s it. From #55 he will fall to around #300.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Alexander Peya/Bruno Soares def. Mahesh Bhupathi/Rajeev Ram 6-4 7-6(9-7)

This, we suspect, is about it for Mahesh Bhupathi….

Doubles – Second Round: Alex Bolt/Andrew Whittington def. (3) David Marrero/Fernando Verdasco 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Simply astounding. We don’t know what happened to Marrero/Verdasco, but this is pretty ugly. And they made the quarterfinal last year, so Marrero will fall at least one spot, and likely more; Verdasco may also fall, although it’s not yet certain.

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Ivan Dodig/Marcelo Melo def. Simone Bolelli/Fabio Fognini 2-6 6-1 6-4

And with that, all of last year’s semifinalists except the Bryans are out; we’d already lost finalist Igor Sijsling and semifinalists Granollers/Lopez; Saturday we lost finalist Robin Haase and semifinalists Bolelli/Fognini. Fognini, who doesn’t need doubles, will end up somewhere around #50; Bolelli, who does need doubles, will probably lose his Top Hundred spot. But Marcelo Melo now looks almost certain to keep the #5 ranking, and Ivan Dodig is very likely to rise to #6.

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Leander Paes/Radek Stepanek def. Daniele Bracciali/Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1 6-4

Paes/Stepanek move closer to clinching their Top Ten spots; we currently show the Top Twelve as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….13040

1..(1) Bryan………….13040

3..(3) Peya……………7400

3..(3) Soares………….7400

5..(5) Melo……………5360

6..(7) Dodig…………..5290

7..(6) Marrero…………4880

8..(8) Verdasco………..4310

9..(9) Paes……………4205

10.(10) Stepanek………..4170

11.(13) Zimonjic………..3760

12.(14) Bopanna…………3750

Doubles – Second Round: (7) Rohan Bopanna/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi def. Colin Fleming/Ross Hutchins 4-6 6-3 6-2

Doubles – Second Round: (8) Daniel Nestor/Nenad Zimonjic def. Marin Draganja/Mate Pavic 7-5 6-1

Daniel Nestor remains unbeatable this year.

Doubles – Second Round: (9) Mariusz Fyrstenberg/Marcin Matkowski def. Jarkko Nieminen/Dmitry Tursunov 5-7 7-5 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – Second Round: (11) Julien Benneteau/Edouard Roger-Vasselin def. Johan Brunstrom/Frederik Nielsen 0-6 7-5 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Treat Huey/Dominic Inglot def. Andreas Seppi/Potito Starace 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: Eric Butorac/Raven Klaasen def. (15) Jamie Murray/John Peers 6-4 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: Pablo Carreno Busta/Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Oliver Marach/Florin Mergea 7-6(7-3) 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (1) Groenefeld/Peya def. Dushevina/Rojer 6-3 7-6(7-5)

Not so good for Mixed rankings, which would have demoted Peya/Groenefeld to unseeded, actually slightly behind Dushevina/Rojer.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Srebotnik/Bopanna def. Kops-Jones/Huey 6-2 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares def. Black/J Murray 6-2 6-4

Medina Garrigues/Soares would have been unseeded under Mixed rankings, too, but still ahead of Black/Murray.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (6) Mirza/Tecau def. H Chan/Lindstedt 4-6 7-6(7-3) 10-8

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Goerges/Qureshi def. Vekic/Kokkinakis 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Mladenovic/Nestor def. Hsieh/Klaasen 7-5 6-3

Mladenovic/Nestor would have been our #1 seeds under Mixed rankings, so this is no surprise, but we’d still call it a bad day for Mixed rankings.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Gajdosova/Ebden def. Sanders/Guccione 6-2 6-4
