Six of the top eight seeds are through to the French Open quarterfinals on the men's side. And the only two that are not--Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer--have worthy replacements in the form of Gael Monfils and Ernests Gulbis. The result is a blockbuster lineup in the last eight.
Light--or lack thereof--is once again an issue at Roland Garros. As a result, we are still missing one of the eight fourth-round matchups as the season's second Grand Slam hits its second week. Safely through, however, are Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer.
Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini delivered again at the French Open, producing a match that was short on quality at times but off the charts in drama. When it was all said and done, Monfils survived a back-and-forth third-round tussle with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory.
No matter that Warren Buffett does not offer $1 billion for a perfect French Open bracket like he does for the NCAA basketball tournament. Nobody would come close. Among those in the third round are Jack Sock, Dusan Lajovic, and Donald Young.
Three days into the BMW Open, only three seeds remain. No. 4 Gael Monfils withdrew prior to his opening match due to an ankle injury. No. 5 Philipp Kohlschreiber, No. 6 Feliciano Lopez, and No. 8 Ivan Dodig all joined him on the sidelines with first-round losses on Tuesday.
For a second straight week there is no Masters 1000 event and this time around there is not even a 500-pointer on the menu. Monte-Carlo and Barcelona have gone by the wayside and the back-to-back stretch of Madri followed by Rome does not begin until next week.
The exodus of agents and players from big-name agencies to smaller operations continued as Lagardere agent Nicolas Lamperin and clients Gael Monfils and Kristina Mladenovic joined "StarWing" sports management, a management company started by former IMG and Lagardere agent Laurence Frankopan.
Andy Murray got off to a really slow start -- a sign of his lack of a coach, perhaps? At least he managed to pick up his game. He'll need a lot more that this to avoid falling to #8, though. Matthew Ebden added only a few points, but that may well be enough to take him above #65.
As an exercise in formulating an impressive roster of tennis names, StarWing Sports Management appears to have most bases covered. As a current day champion the company manages Australian Open winner, Stanislas Wawrinka.
Maybe we’re spoiled. In the first year of the luxurious but also intimate Stadium 2, we expect every match in there to live up to the standard of the host building itself.

Is there some rule that says Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer can never be sound at the same time? Nadal, after a long bout of back problems, is back to defend his title at Indian Wells, but Ferrer -- who lost his opener last year -- will be unable to play; he is the top player missing.
