a new champion of the Shanghai Rolex Masters and it could be Roger Federer.
Unsurprisingly, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer experienced very different fates at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday. Struggling with appendicitis upon his return from three months away due to a wrist injury, Nadal lost his opening match in straight sets to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Federer almost bowed out as well despite being a heavy favorite against Leonardo Mayer, but the Swiss saved five match points and survived in a third-set tiebreaker.
Rafael Nadal is set to go against doctor’s orders and play tomorrow in the Shanghai Rolex Masters after spending three days undergoing hospital treatment for appendicitis.
Another week, another item for the Bryan Brothers record book. In this case, one hundred titles. Pretty routinely. Granollers/Lopez actually had more winners, but they also had far, far more errors -- the Bryans officially produced only five. Hard to beat a team that plays like that.
Roger Federer took a somewhat circuitous route to get to this week's Roger Cup final. For example, he needed seven match points to beat Marin Cilic in a tight three-setter and he lost a rare set to David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. On Saturday night, however, Federer enjoyed much more straightforward affair.
At 33 years old, perhaps it would not have been appropriate if Roger Federer had not been required to work hard for a win on his birthday. Well, he certainly had to do just that in what was his second three-setter in as many days at the Rogers Cup.
Roger Federer capped off an otherwise disappointing day for the top players in the world by outlasting Marin Cilic 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 on Thursday night during third-round action at the Rogers Cup. Fededer needed seven match points over two hours and 39 minutes of play to book a spot in the quarterfinals.
Not often has the United States enjoyed more success on the soccer field than on the tennis court, but that has been the case over the past fortnight. While the American men's national team advanced out of a brutal World Cup group to play Belgium in the round of 16 on Tuesday afternoon, not a single American man or woman reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon singles event.
Before the middle Sunday of no play at Wimbledon, the third round will wrap up with what should be a bang on Saturday. Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are back in action and taking on unseeded opponents. Perhaps the most intriguing matchup pits John Isner against Feliciano Lopez.
As an indication of progress for Bernard Tomic, this is relatively promising. It's no help to his ranking, though. Richard Gasquet will get to add points if he can win any more matches, but he can't rise above #14 this week.
With the French Open having concluded just a week ago and Wimbledon on the immediate horizon, it's no surprise that almost all of the top players in the world are resting as the tour heads to Eastbourne and 's-Hertogenbosch.

Kevin Anderson lives one and a half miles from the site of the Delray Beach Open and the 6 ft 8” South African could not have looked more at home as he swept into the final with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Steve Johnson.
