Cometh the starting hour, cometh the shocks, so it is written…. somewhere, I’m sure. Ana Ivanovic was the first big shock of the day, as her opener on Ashe ended in a nightmare at the hands of last year’s Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova

Serena Williams beat Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-1, opening play with a win as she goes for a repeat title. But the winner was complimentary of her teenaged opponent. "I think it was an interesting match, she played really well, started out super strong," said Williams.
American women are off to a hot start at the U.S. Open, and a child is leading them. CiCi Bellis, all of 15 years old, upset No. 12 seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 during first-round action on Tuesday afternoon. Bellis got a wild card into the main draw by winning the girls' 18s national championship.
As we write, there is a rain delay in Montreal, and it isn't the first of the day. It looks as if the showers won't last long, but the schedule is pretty badly bollixed. We're going to send this now and possibly send another edition later.

If Dominika Cibulkova has a favorite animal, it has to be the chameleon. When she first came up, her speed made her a clay player. Then she turned into an indoor hardcourt player. This year, she's an outdoor hardcourt player, with the Australian Open final on her record and now this.
Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova fulfilled her top seeding after a few rough showings since Melbourne, with the Slovak beating Poland Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
This clearly wasn't a case of Alize Cornet not caring. At 2-5 down in the first set, she was sobbing as she talked to her coach. But what could either of them do? Cornet can't hope to out-hit Venus Williams; all she could do was try to get balls back.
Agnieszka Radwanska still believes she can win a major, even though she keeps falling short. The Pole was the runner-up at 2012 Wimbledon and just shocked two time Australian Open defending titlist Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals in Melbourne but that did not have enough energy left to fight Dominika Cibulkova in the semis.
Ana Ivanovic emerged as the only winning seed on the day as the No. 9 advanced into the second round when Daniela Hantuchova retired injured trailing 7-5, 1-0. A similar fate befell Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova as the tenth seed was unable to continue at 5-5 against Russian cancer survivor Alisa Kleybanova.
