Taking the court for the first time since last March, Juan Martin Del Potro began his most recent comeback with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Denis Kudla in the opening round of the Delray Beach Open on Tuesday evening.

ROGER FEDERER IS SIDELINED BY SURGERY AS DEL POTRO ANNOUNCES HIS RETURN TO TENNIS

In news that surprised the entire tennis world, Roger Federer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus. The 34-year-old Swiss will miss all of February, forcing him to withdraw from tournaments in Rotterdam and Dubai.

Donald Young's first title will have to wait. The huge serving of Ivo Karlovic was too much for Young in Sunday's final at the Delray Beach Open, where Karlovic finished off a week in which he did not get broken a single time by saving all seven of the break points he faced to win 6-3, 6-3.

All four quarterfinal matches went the three-set distance on Friday at the Rio Open and the result was nearly the latest finish in ATP tournament history. Rafael Nadal and Pablo Cuevas did not even get on the court until after 1:00 a.m. because Fabio Fognini's 6-4, 6-7(10), 7-6(9) victory over Federico Delbonis lasted three hours and 12 minutes.

Donald Young maintained his winning ways with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Ivan Dodig in round one of the Delray Beach Open on Tuesday. Young, a recent Memphis semifinalist, improved to 7-3 on the season after prevailing in one hour and 40 minutes.

DONALD YOUNG JR., & OTHER AMERICAN TENNIS PLAYERS HOPE TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM IN DELRAY BEACH BY RICKY DIMON

For the most part it was a solid week at the Memphis Open for Americans, especially Donald Young and Sam Querrey. Both men reached the singles semifinals and Young also finished runner-up in doubles with partner Artem Sitak.
