In news that surprised the entire tennis world, Roger Federer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus. The 34-year-old Swiss will miss all of February, forcing him to withdraw from tournaments in Rotterdam and Dubai.

Donald Young's first title will have to wait. The huge serving of Ivo Karlovic was too much for Young in Sunday's final at the Delray Beach Open, where Karlovic finished off a week in which he did not get broken a single time by saving all seven of the break points he faced to win 6-3, 6-3.

All four quarterfinal matches went the three-set distance on Friday at the Rio Open and the result was nearly the latest finish in ATP tournament history. Rafael Nadal and Pablo Cuevas did not even get on the court until after 1:00 a.m. because Fabio Fognini's 6-4, 6-7(10), 7-6(9) victory over Federico Delbonis lasted three hours and 12 minutes.
