PRO TOUR NEWS – MEN

HOT RIO

Rio de Janeiro

Singles – Second Round: (2) D Ferrer def. (Q) T de Bakker 7-6(10-8) 2-0, retired (stomach)

Toward the end of the first set of this, there were surely overworked staffers here saying, “Why are you putzing around, David Ferrer? We don’t need another three hour match!” (This followed Joao Souza’s marathon.) They needn’t have worried. Having finally won the first set, he broke in the very first game of the second, and Thiemo de Bakker quit a game later — the fourth player to retire here. Not that it makes any difference to Ferrer; he’s going to be #9 no matter what happens here.

Singles – Second Round: A Haider-Maurer def. (3) T Robredo 6-3 6-2

We can’t help but think that, somehow, this is related to the plague of retirements that has hit this place. It’s just crazy. Tommy Robredo won’t rise above #18, and he might fall.

Singles – Second Round: J Monaco def. J Nieminen 6-1 7-6(7-4)

Jarkko Nieminen would probably have been better advised to play indoors in Marseille. But perhaps he thought he ought to go for the 500 point event. That may be a little bit too much to shoot for; his ranking is down to #77.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) J Sousa def. B Rola 6-4 6-7(7-9) 6-4

It almost seemed as if Joao Sousa wanted this to go three hours. If so, he got his wish; it lasted three hours and two minutes, but he’s in the quarterfinal. He came here at #88, just shy of his career high of #84. It looks as if he’ll be surpassing that by a significant margin.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Cabal/Farah def. Giraldo/Ramos-Vinolas 6-4 6-3

Santiago Giraldo was one of those who had retired in singles. Interesting that he played — and did about as well as could reasonably be expected against strong opponents. It would seem that he, at least, is all right.

Doubles – First Round: Andujar/Marach def. (3) Knowle/Melo 6-0 6-3

Looks like another instance of physical problems. Would Knowle/Melo even have played were it not for the fact that Marcelo Melo is Brazilian?

Doubles – First Round: (4) Cuevas/Marrero def. Cermak/Vesely 6-2 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Lorenzi/Schwartzman def. Carreno Busta/Delbonis 6-3 6-3

Only one of these four players is over the age of 24. That one is Paolo Lorenzi. Interesting that his team won; it’s actually the lower-ranked (combined #368 versus #314). But none of these guys are noteworthy for doubles.

Marseille

Singles – First Round: (5) G Simon def. (Q) P Herbert 7-5 2-0, retired (right shoulder)

The retirement plague continues. This was #7 this week — and the total would reach eight when Thiemo de Bakker quit at Rio. As for David Ferrer in Rio, the result hardly matters to Gilles Simon; it’s not enough points to count.

Singles – First Round: (6) D Goffin def. J Janowicz 6-4 6-2

Nothing that matters yet for David Goffin, either, but he leaves Jerzy Janowicz still below #45.

Singles – First Round: S Bolelli def. (SE) L Vanni 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Luka Vanni got a special exempt for reaching the Sao Paulo final. Problem is, that was in clay, and several time zones to the west. So he had a lot of adjusting to do. Too much adjusting, it would appear.

Singles – Second Round: (4) R Bautista Agut def. V Pospisil 7-5 6-4

Is Roberto Bautista Agut trying to tell the world that he isn’t just another Spanish clay-courter? If so, he’s doing a pretty good job. It isn’t likely he’ll rise above #16 this week, but we’re coming up on much bigger tournaments….

Singles – Second Round: (7) (WC) G Monfils def. And Kuznetsov 6-3 6-2

An efficient start, but Gael Monfils needs at least a final to add any points, and to have any chance of returning to the Top Twenty. And that’s if current #20 David Goffin cooperates. So far, Goffin looks at least as good.

Singles – Second Round: S Stakhovsky def. J Struff 6-4 4-6 6-3

Sergiy Stakhovsky continues to perform very well indoors; if the season were even a few weeks longer, he’d have a real shot at the Top Fifty. As it is, he drops Jan-Lennart Struff, who was defending semifinalist points, below #70.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Draganja/Kontinen def. (WC) Zverev/Zverev 2-6 7-5 10-7

Not even playing with his hotshot little brother is enough to help Mischa Zverev these days.

Doubles – First Round: Golubev/Istomin def. (3) J Murray/Peers 7-5 6-7(7-9) 10-7

Doubles – First Round: Junaid/Shamasdin def. (4) Begemann/Haase 3-6 6-4 10-8

Doubles – First Round: Emmrich/Siljestrom def. Daniell/Sitak 7-6(7-0) 6-3

Delray Beach

Singles – Second Round: Y Lu def. (1) K Anderson 7-6(8-6) 6-3

Another week, another non-title for Kevin Anderson. It’s going to be hard to get much above #15 if he can’t change that! Anderson was last year’s finalist, so he loses more than 100 points, but it doesn’t look likely to cost him in the rankings — there was a big gap between #15 and #16 entering this week.

Singles – Second Round: (4) I Karlovic def. (Q) T Kokkinakis 7-6(7-4) 7-6(7-2)

This was perhaps not quite as close as you’d think from the score; Ivo Karlovic won a lot more points than Thanasi Kokkinakis. (That apart from hitting 21 aces.) But there were no breaks, and hence the scoreline. It doesn’t matter to Karlovic, points-wise; he needs two more wins to hit the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: (5) A Mannarino def. (WC) D Kudla 6-2 6-2

It’s by no means certain yet, but we’d guess this will make Adrian Mannarino Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (7) S Johnson def. (WC) A Rublev 6-3 6-3

Even with John Isner and Sam Querrey out, the Americans still have someone to cheer for in Steve Johnson. It’s a big win for Johnson, who came in with 102 points to defend; he’s now sure to stay Top Fifty, and we’d guess he’ll remain above #45.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Brown/Mannarino 6-3 7-5

It’s astounding to realize that the Bryans came in here a mere #26 in the doubles Race. This will help only slightly (they’re now just below #20) — but we’d expect that to change rapidly.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Dodig/Mirnyi def. Fyrstenberg/S Gonzalez 3-6 7-5 10-7

Dodig/Mirnyi didn’t look too good last week, so this may be an improvement.

Doubles – First Round: Tomic/Troicki def. Bedene/A Gonzalez 6-4 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Smith/Venus def. Cerretani/Gabashvili 6-2 7-6(8-6)
