Maria Sharapova defeated Agnieszka Radwanska over three dramatic sets on Friday, but it was not enough to keep her Singapore dream alive. Maria Sharapova bowed out of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global with her head held high after a battling back to defeat a determined Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2.
By virtue of Friday's results at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, Serena Williams has clinched the year-end World No.1 ranking, the fourth time in her career the American has finished a season at No.1 in the world after doing it in 2002, 2009 and 2013.
One race ends, another begins. Maria Sharapova can surely forget about the year-end #1. The question now is, can she manage to hold off Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep in the contest for #2? Maybe Sharapova was still tired after her opening match, but this wasn't really competitive. It took only an hour and fifteen minutes, and Sharapova won a feeble 40% of the points.
Alize Cornet nailed her third win this season over Serena Williams as the American top seed quit with viral illness during her opening second-round match while holding a 6-5 lead. The last to take down Williams three times in the same year was Justin Henin in 2007. Williams said later she felt poorly in a match which was past of a run of upset losses by seeds at the new event.
Injured Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the exhibition International Premier Tennis League competition in Asia with his right wrist injury apparently still bothering him. The one-time No. 1 has not played since losing in the Wimbledon fourth round.
Caroline Wozniacki briefly built a 3-1 lead in the second set. That was the only part of the match to really seem competitive. Otherwise, Ana Ivanovic was in almost complete charge. It took her an hour and 39 minutes to win her fourth title of the season, following Auckland, Monterrey, and Birmingham.
What a way to celebrate China's newest big event: On the very day they hold the draw for their new Premier Five, China's best-ever player, Li Na, announces her retirement!

When the International Tennis Federation and Grand Slam Committee take stock of the 2014 US Open one issue bound to provoke debate is the attitude to serious cramping and heat related issues following the lamentable scenes of an agonized Peng Shuai being pushed off court in wheelchair following her retirement from the women’s semi-final against Caroline Wozniacki.
This was a case where you really didn't have to see the match to imagine what happened. You *knew* Serena Williams would produce most of the power, and end most of the points one way or the other, and that Caroline Wozniacki would get lots and lots of balls back until Serena hit either a winner or an error.
Monaco neighbor Novak Djokovic will be more than prepared to offer moral support and encouragement to fellow pro Caroline Wozniacki as she prepares to run the New York marathon next month to benefit a children's charity.

Well, that wasn't quite the night session that had taken place 24 hours (or less!) earlier. On Monday, Victoria Azarenka overcame Aleksandra Krunic in three sets before Kei Nishikori outlasted Milos Raonic in five. The end result was a tie for the latest finish in U.S. Open history, with Nishikori and Raonic wrapping things up at 2:26 a.m.
Surprises are starting to come on the men's side at the U.S. Open, with David Ferrer going down to Gilles Simon and unseeded Dominic Thiem booking a spot in the fourth round on Sunday. The women's draw, however, has been in relative shambles the entire way. And the WTA upset trend is showing no signs of stopping.
