Rafael Nadal came up the winner but was far from pleased with scheduling procedures at the joint ATP-WTA Rio Open after completing a quarter-final win in the wee small hours of 3:21 a.m.
History did not bode well for Simone Bolelli heading into Thursday's daunting test against Milos Raonic in the second round of the Open 13. Bolelli had lost the first 35 matches of his career against top-10 opponents.
Toward the end of the first set of this, there were surely overworked staffers here saying, "Why are you putzing around, David Ferrer? We don't need another three hour match!" (This followed Joao Souza's marathon.) They needn't have worried.

For the most part it was a solid week at the Memphis Open for Americans, especially Donald Young and Sam Querrey. Both men reached the singles semifinals and Young also finished runner-up in doubles with partner Artem Sitak.

Donald Young booked a spot in his fourth career ATP semifinal and he is one win from a second appearance in a title match after beating Bernard Tomic 7-6(8), 4-6, 7-5 on Friday afternoon at the Memphis Open. The American prevailed after two hours and 14 minutes of back-and-forth momentum swings.

A pair of blockuster quarterfinal lineups are on hand for Friday at the Memphis Open and the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. In Memphis, American fans will be treated to five of their own in action. In Rotterdam, among those still alive in the title hunt are Tomas Berdych, Gael Monfils, Stan Wawrinka, and Gilles Muller.
A high-quality battle in the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Thursday saw Stan Wawrinka overcome familiar foe Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2. Wawrinka fired eight aces without double-faulting as he advanced in two hours and 15 minutes.
