I started out this series of articles to emphasize the importance of the six week season from the week of the Washington D.C. tournament before Toronto through to the end of the US Open. I ended up talking more about the Big Four and how they have attained and maintained their dominance over the field since September 2008, almost 6 years ago.
With Rafael Nadal out of the tournament, this year’s draw was never going to be as nightmarish for Roger Federer as the 2013 version (his No. 5 ranking led him into a quarterfinal clash against Nadal, which the Spaniard won in three sets). It is, however, no walk in the park by any stretch of the imagination.
Roger Federer took a somewhat circuitous route to get to this week's Roger Cup final. For example, he needed seven match points to beat Marin Cilic in a tight three-setter and he lost a rare set to David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. On Saturday night, however, Federer enjoyed much more straightforward affair.

Roger Federer almost had a free day for his 33rd birthday. But that's not the way he would have wanted it, and that's not the way it happened. Instead, Federer will be back at the proverbial office, on the tennis court for quarterfinal action at the Rogers Cup.
With less than three weeks to go before the U.S. Open, the Rogers Cup gives players not only a chance for success at a big tournament but it also opens the door for a major ranking improvement and perhaps a seeded spot at the year's final Grand Slam. In 2013, Roger Federer went back to clay to test out a new racket in between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open Series. This time around, however, there was no sign of the 17-time Grand Slam champion.
Rafael Nadal is out—at least for the next two tournaments—but a strong field will still be on hand for the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Among those back in action for the first time since Wimbledon are Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, and Andy Murray.
The official draw for the 2014 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto was conducted on Friday and hosted by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor at Queen’s Park.
Western & Southern Open defending champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the 2014 tournament due to a right wrist injury. Nadal has also withdrawn from the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto, which precedes the Western & Southern Open.
If you take a look at Part 2 of this series on the Big Four, you will see that since they first took up the first four slots on September 8, 2008 only in 2009 when Del Potro won the US Open and 2012 when Rafa was out for the last half of the year and David Ferrer had a great year has anyone else been able to pierce the 6000 point barrier.
