“I feel more laid back today than I ever have been,” Roger Federer said upon his arrival at this week’s Rogers Cup. “I don’t have to prove anything to anybody. For me, it’s about, ‘How do I feel in practice?’ ‘What’s my motivation?’ I can analyze [things] much more clearly than I ever have.

“I am not in a hectic place. When i was younger, I felt more pressure to do what people said. Now I go my pace and I enjoy the process. I love to go back to places like Toronto.”

That sounds like bad news for Marin Cilic, Federer’s next opponent in third-round action on Thursday. The 32-year-old Swiss, who turns 33 on Friday, is 4-0 lifetime against Cilic–including 3-0 on hard courts. Federer opened on Tuesday with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Peter Polansky, while Cilic has defeated both Denis Istomin and Malek Jaziri in three sets.

Another Swiss, Stan Wawrinka, is bidding for a quarterfinal spot. He is going up aginst Kevin Anderson, to whom he suffered his first loss of 2014 (in three sets in Indian Wells after starting the season 13-0). Wawrinka leads the head-to-head series 3-1 heading into Thursday’s showdown. The world No. 4 survived Benoit Paire 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(2) on Tuesday night; Anderson advanced with wins over Thanasi Kokkinakis and Fabio Fognini.

Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet and Andy Murray are set for their ninth career meeting. Murray, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Nick Kyrgios on Wednesday, leads the head-to-head series 5-3. It has already been an eventful week for Gasquet, who navigated his way through a tough draw to reach the last 16. The 13th-ranked Frenchman avenged a Washington, D.C. semifinal loss to Vasek Pospisil with a 7-5, 7-5 win before overcoming Ivo Karlovic 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the second round.
