Following in the footsteps of national heroes Roger Federer and Andy Murray, Max Mirnyi will be honoured by BelarusPost with a stamp bearing his image to be released on Wednesday, 14th August.
The doubles veteran won Olympic gold with Victoria Azarenka in the mixed doubles at London 2012, defeating Murray and Laura Robson. The stamp will commemorate the pair’s success.
“It was the biggest moment for the country at the time,” Mirnyi told ATPWorldTour.com. “Everyone was closely watching the progress of the Olympic Games. In this particular Olympics, there was only one other gold medal for Belarus, so our progress at Wimbledon was watched very closely. The final was very highly televised and it was a great audience watching it and supporting us. It was a great feeling.”
Mirnyi, a winner of six Grand Slam doubles titles, revealed he had never expected to receive such an honour from the Belarusian government.
“We had individual congratulations notes from high-ranked politicians. But this was pretty unique because I closely watched a few years back when Federer had his stamps issued in Switzerland and Murray recently had his after Wimbledon. It was cool to see that recognition from the government and to have no idea or expectation that this would come my way.”
How does it feel for the 36-year-old Mirnyi to see his own face staring back at him from a postage stamp?
“It’s pretty unique,” laughed Mirnyi. “I normally do all the mailing and paying the bills myself. I like picking the stamps and sticking them on the envelope. It’ll be fun to go and pick one up of my own!”
