Roger Federer will take a 9-0 record against Andreas Seppi into his opening match after the Italian booked his spot against the four-time champion with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Lleyton Hewitt.
Controversy erupted after WTA year-end final contender Angelique Kerber made a late entry and was inserted into the draw on the bottom instead of the top after Austrian No. 337 LisaMarie Moser made a convenient withdrawal due to "personal reasons" after the draw was made.
Early in the second set, Serena Williams seemed to suffer some sort of pain. It let Jelena Jankovic go up 2-1 in the set. But Jankovic then had the trainer out -- and didn't win another game. Not exactly a fun final to watch.
Yawn. Agnieszka Radwanska may be #4, but she really isn't a threat to the top three. Certainly not to Serena Williams, who is going to be #1 for the rest of the year and quite a lot longer....
It looks as if Novak Djokovic wants to keep the #1 ranking -- he's saving his energy for the big matches. But he still trails Rafael Nadal in safe points. He leaves Sam Querrey at #31.
Six straight wins for Milos Raonic. He still has a lot of defending to do, and remains at #11 (a ranking he has now clinched due Tommy Haas's loss), but the points count in the Race....

Serena really looked uncomfortable here, but she's good at finding ways to win. It is her seventieth victory of the season -- the first time in half a decade that anyone has won that many matches in a year.

A tough start, considering that Milos Raonic cannot rise above #11 no matter what he does here. He had sixteen break chances and converted only one. Which left him stuck out there for two and a half hours.

Ernests Gulbis was down a set and 3-0 in the second. And then -- he managed to get things working. Obviously he lost only one more game.
