****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Tokyo

Singles – Final: (1) (WC) J Del Potro def. (3) M Raonic 7-6(7-5) 7-5

Milos Raonic tried to look on the bright side: “There is not really much to be down about. I created opportunities and barring a double fault and a few points I could not have done much better.” But Juan Martin del Potro was able to riposte, “I played really well in the last two games of the match, returning all of his first serves.” And if Raonic isn’t winning on serve, he isn’t winning at all….

For del Potro, it’s his third title of the season (following Rotterdam and Washington) — and all 500 point events, so they all count, and all count significantly. The title takes him to #5 in the rankings — and #5 in the Race, which means he is effectively certain to qualify for London (although he has not officially qualified yet).

In the rankings, Raonic doesn’t move; he remains stuck at #11. But he’s up to #10 in the Race. And he likes fast indoor surfaces. He’s a long, long way from qualifying for London. But still, his eight straight wins last week and this week have turned what seemed a near-impossibility into a genuine chance.

Doubles – Final: (4) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. J Murray/Peers 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Jamie Murray and John Peers came here with three titles this year and a seven match winning streak. And couldn’t win. That seems to be their real problem: They only win 250 point events. It’s going to be tough to really get ahead that way.

Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, on the other hand, are thinking big thoughts: “We started playing together after Wimbledon, so we knew that the battle to qualify in London would be hard. We would have to do well at the big tournaments and in Shanghai and Paris. We will take the confidence we have from here.” But it actually possible. They came here #17 in the Race. This — the second title of the year for Bopanna, the third for Roger-Vasselin, but their first together — leaves them a little below the Top Ten, but needing (we would guess) “only” about 1200 points from where they need to be. Possible? Sure — finals at Shanghai and Paris would do it. But it’s a tall order….

Beijing

Singles – Final: (1) N Djokovic def. (2) R Nadal 6-3 6-4

It was a contest of “nevers.” Novak Djokovic had never been beaten in Beijing. Rafael Nadal had never been beaten on hardcourt this year. But, as Djokovic said, “I needed this win today. I really wanted to get my hands on the trophy and win against Nadal who has been the best player so far in 2013.” He broke in Nadal’s first service game in both the first and second sets, and the breaks held up.

It is the fourth title in Beijing for Djokovic, who is 19-0 at the event; he won in 2009 and 2010, missed 2011, and won again in 2012. But, somewhat disturbingly, it is only title #4 of the year for him.

The good news is, it keeps him close to Rafael Nadal in the contest for #1 — just a few dozen points behind. But he has Shanghai to defend this week. He can’t possibly regain any ground next week, and he is far behind in the Race: Nadal has move than 11,000 points, Djokovic a little more than 8500. Nadal hasn’t clinched the year-end #1 (although he is certain to be at least #2), but for Djokovic to gain 2500 points, with only about 4000 available (1500 for London, 1000 each for Shanghai and Paris, plus one more 500 point event) will be very tough indeed….

Doubles – Final: Mirnyi/Tecau def. Fognini/Seppi 6-4 6-2

Max Mirnyi said it, “It was certainly a good week, considering how the past couple of weeks went.” It has been that sort of year for them. They had two previous titles, but both were 250 point events. #11 in the Race coming in, they are still below the Top Eight. But this gives them better hopes. As Horia Tecau noted, they’re playing all four remaining weeks of the year. If sheer work can get them there, they will try….

Shanghai

Singles – First Round: L Rosol def. J Benneteau 6-3 1-6 6-3

It looks as if Julien Benneteau will again stay stuck below #30.

Singles – First Round: P Andujar def. M Youzhny 5-2, retired

This likely means no Top Twenty spot for Mikhail Youzhny. It’s pretty bad for his faint London hopes, too.

Singles – First Round: F Mayer def. (WC) D Wu 6-3 6-3

Florian Mayer’s current ranking wouldn’t even have gotten him into Shanghai. But a nice draw helps. He’ll need more to return to the Top Fifty, however.

Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. D Tursunov 4-6 6-4 6-4

A fairly big upset on this surface, and one that will leave Dmitry Tursunov still around #40.

* Serena cruises to Beijing title

****** TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS ******

Beijing

Singles – Final: (1) Serena Williams def. (8) Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-2

Early in the second set, Serena Williams seemed to suffer some sort of pain. It let Jelena Jankovic go up 2-1 in the set. But Jankovic then had the trainer out — and didn’t win another game. Not exactly a fun final to watch.

Still, it emphasizes just how amazing Serena has been this year. She has almost a 5000 point lead on #2 Victoria Azarenka in the rankings. She is now 66-4 (with a walkover and a withdrawal); she has won 94% of the matches she has played, apart from Fed Cup. She has won nine of the fourteen tournaments she has entered (nine of thirteen that she actually played; she withdrew from Dubai after play began) — including eight of the last ten. She has titles on four continents. And she shows no signs of slowing down.

Jelena Jankovic is still looking for her first title since Bogota, and her first big title since Indian Wells 2010. But she is now 43-17 in 2013.(72%), with two finals and three semifinals. It is her best year since 2010. And it has taken her to #8 in both rankings and race. She has a good shot at the year-end Championships. It would be her first appearance since 2010.
