Back to the final for Juan Martin del Potro, who now has almost a thousand point lead on Tomas Berdych in the contest for a year-end Top Five spot. It still looks as if he could end the year at #4, or even #3.
What can we say except, "Another bad day at the office for Petra Kvitova"? These were the matches she was winning two years ago.... Instead, she ends another disappointing year stuck at #6.

It was almost as if Roger Federer had magically seen the Paris draw (which all but assures that he will earn a London spot) and slacked off.
Vasek Pospisil (ASICS FW & APP) advanced to the quarter-finals as he avenged his loss last week to Robin Haase with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the first round and today beat 6'11" Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-4 who had previously upset world #7 Tomas Berdich just one day prior!
Victoria Azarenka's physical problems apparently were real. This was a contest for a semifinal spot, and it was really not very interesting -- Li Na said later that she thought Azarenka (who hurt her back in the first set, but who was already in trouble) would retire from the match.

A big opportunity for Daniel Brands -- one more win would likely make him Top Fifty, and he faces an unseeded opponent next.
Jelena Jankovic is 1-1, which means she is tied in matches with Victoria Azarenka (although she has a better record in sets). The remaining White Group matchs are Li versus Azarenka and Jankovic versus Errani.
Hardly a surprise, but it leaves Serena 2-0, meaning she is all but sure to make the semifinal. Agnieszka Radwanska is 0-2, which means she still hasn't overtaken Maria Sharapova in the contest for #3; she needs a win to take the #3 spot.
Third seed Nicolas Almagro began the week by winning an all-Spanish final over Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-3 while fifth seeded Pole Jerzy Janowicz followed suit as he put out Spain's Pablo Carreno 7-5, 7-6(7).
Serena Williams quickly established superiority at the final event of the season as the top seed and world No. 1 beat German eighth seed Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1.
Two Spaniards swept to home wins on opening day, with Marcel Granollers beating slumping Serb and former top 10 player Janko Tipsarevic 1-2 when Tipsarevic retired injured after just a few minutes on court.
Richard Gasquet, we have good news and bad news for you.
The good news is, of course, that he won the title here. It's the tenth title of his career, and his third of 2013. That matches the best previous year of his career, in 2006.
Let's hope this was David Ferrer finally discovering his indoor form and not Ernests Gulbis melting down again. At least Gulbis lasted long enough to put himself in the Top 25; he is likely to end up at #24.
